MARIETTA, Ga. — Christian Pulisic, a prominent figure for the United States, conceded he senses strain as a domestic World Cup draws near, yet affirmed, “I can certainly manage it.”
Pulisic, an offensive player for AC Milan, along with the remainder of the USMNT squad, is getting ready for exhibition matches against Belgium this Saturday, followed by Portugal three days hence. The American contingent will not reassemble until May, following the finalization of the World Cup squad by head coach Mauricio Pochettino.

The United States will commence its World Cup campaign, co-hosted with Canada and Mexico, facing Paraguay on June 12 in Inglewood, California.
“Certainly, you [media members] desire me to experience the burden, without a doubt. The strain exists; it’s a World Cup,” Pulisic stated during Friday’s press briefing.
“My role on the squad is not the reason for it, nor is anything else. I am accustomed to this. I would not wish to occupy any alternative role. I am extremely fortunate; I consider it a great honor to be in this situation. The pressure is present, and I acknowledge it.
“Indeed. It exists, but it’s a challenge I can overcome. I intend to confront it directly. As a collective unit, we operate. I am not required to accomplish this alone. That is its true advantage. I have teammates such as [Weston McKennie], my entire squad supporting me, the personnel, a nation of supporters, and my sole focus is on performing optimally. That is my complete capability.”
For an extended period, Pulisic has served as the prominent figure for the USMNT, and the aspiration is for him to guide the American squad to a substantial advancement in this summer’s competition. The most advanced stage the U.S. men’s team has attained in a World Cup, dating back to the initial 13-team contest in 1930, was a quarterfinal berth in 2002.
The 27-year-old indicated that these kinds of anticipations do not unsettle him, particularly considering his tenure with elite clubs such as Chelsea and Milan, and his prior participation in a World Cup four years ago in Qatar.
“I would suggest that at this juncture of my professional journey, it poses minimal difficulty for me. I have grown quite accustomed to it. I have simply removed the majority of social media applications from my mobile device. It’s rather straightforward. I simply endeavor to steer clear of it. Furthermore, various demands will invariably persist.
“It seems to me that individuals … Indeed, you all might perceive a greater burden than truly exists, owing to your observation and consumption of it, which is your professional function. Yet, in actuality, I am largely unmindful of it.”
Pulisic further stated that he maintains elevated benchmarks for himself, and any strain he encounters stems from these personal expectations.
“I impose considerable demands upon myself. We, as a team, place significant strain upon ourselves concerning our desired performance and the effort we invest; we hold ourselves to high expectations,” he remarked. “Our endeavor is to concentrate on those aspects that genuinely count, namely the individuals who directly influence us. And that constitutes our sole true recourse.”
