Despite captain Virgil van Dijk’s wish for his team to achieve a higher level of execution, Ronald Koeman, the Netherlands’ manager, commended his squad’s performance following their 2-1 triumph against Norway in an Amsterdam-held World Cup friendly.
The Netherlands overcame an initial disadvantage to clinch the victory. Goals from Van Dijk and Tijjani Reijnders registered on the scoresheet for the Dutch, coming after Andreas Schjelderup had earlier put Norway ahead.
Following the contest, Koeman expressed he was heartened by his side’s collective display against such formidable adversaries.
He remarked, “This was undeniably an excellent fixture for us against a highly capable nation.”
“There’s a rather common Dutch perception that when facing Norway, one is obligated to defeat them. However, that is simply not accurate. During the preliminary rounds, for example, they triumphed over Italy on two occasions.”
He added, “Norway certainly experienced effective spells against us. Nevertheless, considering the full encounter, I believe we merited the victory.”
Even without several of their key players, the Netherlands managed to maintain command over significant portions of the match, notably in the second half following the interval.
Nonetheless, Van Dijk indicated that further refinement is still required prior to the World Cup, which is set to unfold throughout Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
“There are still tasks remaining,” he commented. “During certain periods, things proceeded smoothly, but at other times, less effectively.”
He continued, “I believed we demonstrated superiority in the second half, partially as a result of their increased fatigue. Ultimately, we generated ample scoring opportunities to net additional goals. Our defensive efforts were also robust. We prevailed justly, and now we must progress.”
As Koeman puts the finishing touches on his roster prior to the championship, the Dutch will maintain their build-up with forthcoming matches against Ecuador and Algeria. In the initial phase of the tournament, they are set to confront Japan, Tunisia, and either Poland or Sweden.
