Ito’s Edge: Visitors Snatch Hampden Win by a Whisker

Junya Ito netted the sole strike of the match with under ten minutes left on the clock, as Japan emerged triumphant 1-0 against Scotland at Hampden Park.

Ito found the back of the net with a precise shot in the 84th minute, following numerous near misses from the away team – a squad positioned among the world’s top twenty nations.

Although the home side commenced both periods energetically, they were eventually overcome by a Japanese squad that predominantly controlled the play, prolonging their remarkable streak to only one loss across eleven fixtures.

For Clarke’s squad, this match served as a valuable benchmark prior to the global tournament this summer, where Scotland will be aiming to advance beyond the group stage for the initial occasion.

The Course of Events

A characteristically boisterous Hampden Park witnessed an early opportunity when a lofted delivery from John McGinn located the advancing Scott McTominay, who unleashed a powerful, immediate shot directly towards Zion Suzuki.

The Japan goalkeeper executed an excellent reflex stop, deflecting the shot onto the right upright before the ball was cleared.

Buoyed by their recent World Cup success – an unforgettable 4-2 triumph over Denmark last year – Scotland were seeking to gather impetus as they approached their first World Cup since 1998.

Since that particular competition – Japan’s inaugural appearance – the East Asian side has been a constant fixture in the final stages, and after McTominay’s attempt, the away team’s prowess started to become evident.

Subsequently, Hajime Moriyasu’s side commanded the ball, yet their initial genuine opportunity didn’t materialize until the 38th minute when Ao Tanaka struck the crossbar’s upper edge from within the penalty area.

Shortly after Kaishu Sano had unleashed an impulsive volley well above the target, another incisive attack saw Yuito Suzuki direct a shot towards the arms of Angus Gunn.

Scottish relief at interval signal

The home team would have been relieved by the mid-game signal, though Clarke’s men displayed greater potential following the interval.

McTominay once more challenged Suzuki, before captain Andy Robertson’s determined surge into the penalty area forced a save from the away side’s custodian.

Japan then introduced fresh legs, and replacement Ito almost made an instant impression, eluding the Scottish defence before unleashing an attempt that Gunn was able to thwart.

Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma – another change – then came agonizingly close, dashing into the area and lifting the sphere past the Scotland goalkeeper; however, Kenny McLean was present to avert the danger.

Two Scottish substitutions, Kieran Tierney and George Hirst, linked up effectively before the second managed to carve out some room within the eighteen-yard box; yet, the Ipswich Town man could only pull his grounded shot just wide of the closest upright.

Shortly thereafter, Japan opened the scoring through Ito, with the Genk forward seizing the unattached sphere, controlling it, and then gently slotting a shot past Gunn into the bottom corner to secure the win.
