Salesforce, the colossal cloud software firm, has been reorienting its operations around AI. At an intimate assembly in San Francisco on Tuesday, CEO Marc Benioff and his team showcased the latest outcomes of those endeavors: an enhanced iteration of Slack, featuring a plethora of novel AI functionalities. The paramount innovation among these is a substantial enhancement for its AI agent, known as Slackbot.

These 30 fresh capabilities, which are slated for accessibility in the ensuing months, build upon a January update that had endowed Slackbot with autonomous functions. These included the capacity to compose electronic messages, arrange appointments, and peruse your message repository for particular data.

Perhaps the most remarkable attribute disclosed Tuesday is what the company terms reusable AI-skills. These enable individuals to delineate specific assignments for Slackbot which, once established, may be utilized across a multitude of diverse situations and environments. Slackbot arrives with an integrated repository of AI-skills, Salesforce states, but users retain the option to develop their personalized iterations.

Once these competencies are configured, they substantially diminish the effort an employee might otherwise expend. For example, a user can activate a proficiency using a straightforward directive within Slack—such as, “devise a budget” for an impending gathering—instigating Slackbot to aggregate all pertinent data from a company’s Slack channels, along with any linked applications or information origins, to formulate an implementable blueprint. The bot will then spontaneously arrange a discussion to review the plan, soliciting pertinent personnel based on their designations.

Slackbot now also operates as an MCP (Model Context Protocol) client, implying it can interface with and synchronize alongside external utilities and platforms. Among those is Agentforce, Salesforce’s artificial intelligence agent creation framework launched in 2024. Via this linkage, it can “direct tasks or pose inquiries to Agentforce or any agent or app in your enterprise,” the company asserts, with the agent discovering the optimal and streamlined route for the information, devoid of manual input.

According to Rob Seaman, Slack’s provisional chief executive and erstwhile head of product, Slackbot can additionally now convert spoken words from sessions into text and abridge their content. Should a meeting participant inadvertently lose focus, thus overlooking crucial specifics, they merely need to ask Slackbot to generate an overview of the discussion, encompassing any delegated tasks designated for them.

The agent is also now capable of functioning independently of Slack and observing your computer-based operations — Salesforce lists “your deals, your conversations, your calendar, and your habits” as the categories of information it utilizes. Drawing upon that framework, the bot will offer implementable recommendations or compose subsequent communications for vital assignments. Seaman has affirmed that confidentiality safeguards are integrated into this architecture and that users possess the ability to modify access rights when requisite.

In essence: Salesforce is evidently aiming to propel Slack past its foundational origins as a corporate messaging instrument, situating it instead as a more adaptable framework capable of managing a broader spectrum of commercial duties. The aspiration appears to be that, by saturating it with artificial intelligence, Slack can become an essential component of enterprise users’ fundamental operational workflows.

Benioff permitted his colleagues to present the principal functionalities on Tuesday but observed, during his primary address, that the five years since Salesforce acquired Slack had represented a “remarkable odyssey,” one that had yielded a “two-and-a-half-fold increase in earnings.” He further added: “We have approximately a million enterprises leveraging Slack. It’s been a monumental expansion narrative.”
