Apple has deployed a safety patch for legacy iPhone and iPad models, which safeguards them from a disclosed collection of potent cyberattack instruments designed to pilfer data from an individual’s gadget.

The technology behemoth announced Wednesday its release of iOS 18.7.7 and iPadOS 18.7.7, enabling a wider array of gadgets to obtain crucial defensive measures against online assaults dubbed DarkSword.

DarkSword represents an exploit suite that facilitates unauthorized entry into Apple devices operating on iOS versions 18.4 to 18.7. This is achieved merely by navigating to a webpage containing the nefarious script, for instance, credible sites that have fallen victim to compromise. These vulnerabilities pilfer an individual’s device information, encompassing texts, browsing logs, geographical coordinates, and digital currency, then transmit this information to a server maintained by the perpetrators.

These instruments have previously surfaced in specific assaults aimed at individuals in China, Malaysia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Ukraine. However, with the public release of these utilities online, cybersecurity experts caution that any individual could employ these exploit kits to attack individuals utilizing earlier iterations of Apple’s handheld operating system.

Apple states that individuals operating its newest software, iOS 26, received protection several weeks prior. The firm has additionally distributed a fresh patch for iOS 18 users whose iPhones and iPads lack the capability to operate iOS 26.

Nonetheless, through Wednesday’s latest patch, Apple has now delivered DarkSword remedies to the millions of users possessing un-remediated devices which are able to upgrade to iOS 26 but have deliberately foregone the installation. A portion of users have decided against updating to circumvent the software’s novel “liquid glass” graphical user interface, which has garnered widespread user dissatisfaction.

Earlier on Wednesday, Wired magazine indicated that Apple intended to deploy the patch.

Apple clientele who have enabled automated software upgrades are expected to acquire the fresh software. Apple affirmed that its elective safety feature, Lockdown Mode, additionally provides defense against DarkSword incursions. The corporation informed TechCrunch during the previous week that it lacks knowledge of any prosperous state-sponsored surveillance software assault targeting an Apple gadget operating in Lockdown Mode.
