## Lockheed Martin’s Groundbreaking Next-Gen Interceptor Achieves First Flight Milestone

Lockheed Martin has successfully completed the inaugural flight test of its cutting-edge Next-Generation Short-Range Interceptor (NGSRI), a system poised to become the successor to the venerable Stinger missile. This significant achievement marks a pivotal step in developing advanced air defense capabilities for the future battlefield.

### Charting a New Course for Short-Range Air Defense

The initial flight test, conducted on January 13th at the U.S. Army’s White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, represents the first in a planned sequence of evaluations. These tests are meticulously designed to rigorously demonstrate the interceptor’s performance characteristics and overall system maturity. Lockheed Martin confirmed that this event provided crucial validation for key subsystems integrated into the missile’s innovative design. Positioning the NGSRI as a prime candidate for the U.S. Army’s evolving short-range air defense requirements, this early milestone underscores the rapid progress in its development.

### Engineered for Tomorrow’s Threats Today

The NGSRI is meticulously engineered with an open systems architecture and a modular design, ensuring adaptability and future upgradeability. This forward-thinking approach allows the system to remain relevant against an ever-evolving spectrum of aerial threats. Lockheed Martin highlights the interceptor’s enhanced capabilities in countering a diverse array of adversaries, including unmanned aerial systems (UAS), as well as both rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft, delivering substantial performance improvements over existing legacy short-range air defense missiles. Demonstrating remarkable agility, the company brought the NGSRI from concept to its initial flight test within a mere 26 months following the contract award in 2023.

### Industry Leaders on the Breakthrough

Randy Crites, Vice President of Lockheed Martin Advanced Programs, lauded the team’s commitment: *”Our collective mission focus, innovative methodologies, and inherent agility were absolutely critical in reaching this monumental milestone. Lockheed Martin is not just participating in, but actively driving, the future of integrated air and missile defense by advancing technologies that are essential for safeguarding our warfighters and allies against increasingly sophisticated threats.”*

Adding to this sentiment, Chris Murphy, Business Development Lead at Lockheed Martin Advanced Programs, emphasized the speed of execution: *”The successful completion of this first flight test stands as a powerful testament to our team’s agility and unwavering drive to deliver critical defense capabilities on an incredibly accelerated timeline. We managed to complete our controlled flight test series in less than six months, showcasing the unparalleled speed and dynamism that the Lockheed Martin team brings to this exciting and vital competition.”*

The interceptor integrates a suite of advanced technologies into its core design, with Lockheed Martin confirming that further comprehensive testing is slated as its development continues to advance.
