This policy document placed an amplified priority on the Western Hemisphere, necessitating a robust and dedicated space capability within the region.

Colonel Alford eloquently articulated the broader vision behind the new command during the ceremony: “The activation of Space Forces Southern affirms a simple and powerful idea: we are one hemisphere, stronger together. This strategic move aligns with a recent surge in activity for U.S. Southern Command as a whole. Recent months have seen a major uptick in operations, notably Operation Southern Spear, which targets drug trafficking and exerts pressure on the Maduro regime, alongside the aforementioned Operation Absolute Resolve.

The indispensable role of space assets in these heightened operations cannot be overstated. Photographic evidence released in mid-December revealed Guardians—the Space Force’s personnel—deployed to Puerto Rico on December 4th, coinciding with a significant buildup of U.S. military forces across the Caribbean. Crucially, General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, explicitly acknowledged U.S. Space Command’s contribution to Operation Absolute Resolve. Citing operational security, officials have largely remained tight-lipped regarding the specific details of this involvement.
A SPACECOM spokesperson previously clarified the fundamental importance of space-based capabilities: “Space-based capabilities such as Positioning, Navigation and Timing and satellite communications are foundational to all modern military activities.” They further elaborated on SPACECOM’s readiness to act: “As such, to protect the Joint Force from space-enabled attack and ensure their freedom of movement, U.S. Space Command possesses the means and willingness to employ combat-credible capabilities that deter and counter our opponents and project power in all warfighting domains.”

General Saltzman echoed this sentiment, directly referencing recent events within the SOUTHCOM area of responsibility (AOR). He emphatically stated, “As we clearly saw in recent operations in the SOUTHCOM [area of responsibility], without space, kill chains don’t close, our strategic advantage evaporates, and we can’t complete our joint missions.”
While U.S. Space Command is ultimately responsible for delivering effects from orbit, its effectiveness hinges on seamless coordination with U.S. Southern Command and the newly established Space Forces Southern.
