The contest unfolded with far greater intensity than widely anticipated, yet it culminated in a 6-3 triumph for the United States against Denmark.

Having secured two victories in as many games, the U.S. now sits atop the Group C standings as they approach their Sunday confrontation with Germany.

Team USA initially fell behind 2-1 after the opening period, but then surged back with three goals in the second frame. They successfully held Denmark at bay until the conclusion, with Jake Guentzel and Jack Hughes netting crucial insurance markers.

Presented here are our observations from the encounter, alongside a comprehensive team evaluation and significant inquiries to contemplate before Team USA’s subsequent fixture.

Takeaway 1: Is Jeremy Swayman equipped for this critical juncture?

His performance against Denmark did not suggest so. Boston’s netminder conceded three goals from merely a dozen shots; among them, a formidable center-ice blast from rugged Danish league defender Nick Jensen and a point shot from fellow blueliner Phillip Bruggissier, occurring with under three seconds left in the second frame.

This was a stark contrast to the nearly flawless display delivered by Connor Hellebuyck during the USA’s 5-1 victory over Latvia to commence the tournament.

Swayman had ample opportunity to recuperate and prepare for his inaugural Olympics appearance, and frankly, it could not have transpired more unfavorably from an individual standpoint.

The U.S. faces a consecutive game scenario with Germany looming on Sunday, so Swayman would not have been back in the net immediately regardless. However, his shaky showing certainly brings the USA’s goaltending depth under scrutiny as they enter what is expected to be their most challenging sequence of games leading to the ultimate conclusion (whatever form that may take).

Takeaway 2: When the USA’s offensive thrust ignites, it becomes formidable

A prime example: the seamless connection from Auston Matthews to Jake Guentzel for the Americans’ fifth goal of the match—a magnificent one-timer by Guentzel that prompted an exuberant celebration from the Lightning forward.

Equally, if not more, effective for the U.S. was the broad distribution of offensive contributions. Whether it was Matt Boldy leveling the score early on, or Brady Tkachuk and Jack Eichel converting precise faceoff wins into second-period goals, there was no sole prominent individual bearing the entire load upfront. This bodes well for the U.S. moving ahead.

Takeaway 3: Jack Hughes appears quite effective as a winger

Coach Mike Sullivan repositioned the New Jersey Devils’ center from his customary role to play alongside Brock Nelson instead (with J.T. Miller on the opposing wing). This adjustment has enabled Hughes to deliver a strong two-game performance to kick off this competition.

Hughes enjoys greater offensive liberty when playing with Nelson, and it’s clear from his vigor and sudden bursts of velocity that the alteration has benefited him. Sullivan has had to carefully manage everyone’s ice time—especially given the abundance of talent at his disposal—but Hughes and his line might be earning themselves more shifts in future games.

Some uncertainties surrounded Hughes leading into the Olympics, as his NHL season hadn’t met his usual high standards of dominance. He seems to be flourishing in this new assignment. We might not yet have witnessed the full extent of Hughes’ capabilities in such a high-stakes environment.

Each skater has a specific duty. The younger Tkachuk brother, notably, executed his assignment with exceptional skill on Saturday.

He embodies the Americans’ driving force, their engine, their very core; however one chooses to characterize it. Tkachuk approaches every shift as if it could be his last, and every single moment on the ice holds profound significance for him.

When he netted the goal to bring the score to 2-2, it was as if he activated a surge of energy for the U.S. team, invigorating everyone else. Tkachuk’s infectious vitality is sometimes overshadowed by his reputation as a powerful physical player, but that might not even be the primary reason he is such a valuable asset for Team USA.

When his teammates are feeling low, Tkachuk can be relied upon to uplift them. This quality is invariably beneficial for a triumphant squad.

Big question: How will the U.S. fare with minimal rest against a skillful German contingent?

Latvia and Denmark served as ideal adversaries to gently introduce the USA into the competition. However, Germany, set to face them on Sunday, could present the Americans with their initial substantial challenge.

Leon Draisaitl is a star player in his own right, and Tim Stutzle delivered an outstanding performance in Germany’s 3-1 win over Denmark. While the U.S. boasts its own cadre of superstars, they will also confront the demanding task of containing some of the NHL’s elite skaters on the opposing side of the rink.

Furthermore, Sullivan might wish to implement certain modifications—or perhaps retain those he chose from Saturday’s victory. Will there be player changes for the U.S., apart from in goal? Or is Sullivan prepared to commit to the individuals who will lead this squad to the presumed ultimate glory?

The window for preliminary adjustments is closing rapidly, and it is now, so Sullivan must possess conviction in his deployment of the U.S. skaters for one final rehearsal before the elimination rounds commence.

Overall team grade: A-

We are compelled to deduct a partial mark from the Americans solely due to Swayman’s display (such goals simply cannot occur) and their second consecutive unpolished first period.

Nevertheless, the U.S. performed admirably in nearly every other facet and ultimately managed the Danes as anticipated.

Their scoring depth has genuinely excelled, team defense was remarkably stifling in the latter half against Denmark in particular, and the squad generally appears to be gelling with commendable synergy. The focus now shifts to whether they can elevate their performance against Germany and be at their most potent once the quarterfinals get underway.
