GREENVILLE, S.C. — Vanderbilt’s head coach, Shea Ralph, was expelled during an 89-78 defeat to Ole Miss in the quarterfinal round of the SEC women’s basketball championship on Friday evening, likely extinguishing the Commodores’ remote prospects for a top seed in the NCAA tournament.
Ole Miss perplexed the fifth-ranked Commodores defensively from the outset of the match, disconcerting and vexing SEC Player of the Year Mikayla Blakes along with her colleagues through the initial three periods while the Rebels established a significant advantage that swelled to 32 points.
Subsequently, at the beginning of the final quarter, Blakes incurred her fourth personal foul. Ralph vociferated at the referees and was subsequently expelled. On air, her voice was audible as she challenged the ruling and declared to the game officials, “You are terrible.”
“My intention was not to be removed from the game,” Ralph stated. “I further believe that, at that moment, both my remarks and my conduct were justifiable, and I will uphold that stance. If they wish to expel me for it, they are free to do so. What I truly appreciate is the resilience my squad displayed. One can only reiterate a point so many times; therefore, I expressed it in another manner, leading to my ejection, which is acceptable.”
When queried about the justification for her actions, Ralph responded, “Avoid attempting to incur a penalty for me,” prior to stating, “As mentors, we simply desire uniformity from our squad, our personnel, and everyone engaged in the contest. That is my sole objective.”
Subsequently, when questioned concerning Blakes’ difficulties during the initial part of the match, Ralph commented, “I believed she was subjected to a foul. She was being restrained, and there are limited methods to react to such an occurrence. My understanding of her is that she will contend vigorously to secure victory in the game. And that young player battled ceaselessly until the conclusion.”
Blakes amassed merely one point in the opening half, failing on all 10 attempts, yet concluded with 24 points. She solely contributed 13 points in the final quarter, aiding in invigorating the Commodores following Ralph’s removal. Vanderbilt exhibited renewed vigor from that juncture onward, but was unable to narrow the deficit to less than ten points.
Ralph quipped, “Perhaps I ought to have been expelled earlier, considering the manner in which they performed, the tenacity they demonstrated.”
Nonetheless, Ralph stated that the outcome alters nothing for Vanderbilt as they proceed toward the NCAA championship, apart from potentially providing a slight additional incentive, in light of the conclusion.
“This modifies nothing regarding our season, nor does it impact our accomplishments,” Ralph declared, “and I believe it merely intensifies the impetus for future endeavors.”
