Force Your MacBook to Only Charge up to 80 Percent (and Why You Should)

Batteries are not mystical. They are compositions of chemicals. And, like most human-made constructions, they gradually degrade with age. This is likely not news to you—anyone who has possessed a MacBook is aware that its charge capacity steadily declines over time. But what if I suggested it’s feasible to postpone this decline?

A frequently shared recommendation involves limiting your gadgets’ power replenishment to 80 percent for the majority of instances. Battery University, supported by a consulting firm assisting major corporations in optimizing battery performance, advocates for this practice, citing its investigations. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory concurs.

Yet, how can one effectively implement this counsel? The encouraging revelation is that your MacBook to some extent inherently performs this function, and an excellent no-cost software is available that enables you to achieve greater control.

Integrated Performance Enhancement

Your Mac is engineered to cap its power intake at 80 percent—at least, in certain scenarios. As a standard setting, Mac devices assimilate your power replenishment and operational habits, recharging your battery accordingly. Apple states, “Your Mac postpones reaching a charge beyond 80 percent when it anticipates a prolonged connection to power, and endeavors to bring the battery to full capacity prior to disconnection.”

What are the implications of this? For instance, if you routinely power your laptop through the night, your Mac will charge up to 80 percent, then wait until morning to finalize the last fifth of the charge. The objective is to reduce the duration the power cell remains at maximum capacity, doing so imperceptibly.

The advantageous aspect of this feature is that no action is required on your part to attend to the longevity of your power source. Your Mac is already proactively striving to limit charging to 80 percent whenever your typical usage patterns indicate it will not inconvenience you.

(This capability is actually an inherent macOS configuration, activated by default. You can locate it withinSettings>Battery>Battery Health, where you have the option to deactivate this safeguarding option, though you should continue perusing to ascertain its optimal utility.)

Should you prefer to never again concern yourself with your battery’s charge level, you may cease reading here. Nevertheless, if you desire greater command, I offer some guidance.

Assume Command Using a Complimentary Application

Several possible drawbacks exist with Apple’s methodology. Primarily, users lack agency. For instance, you might find your MacBook insufficiently powered should you arise sooner than customary for a journey, leaving you with a partially depleted power source on an extended day of transit.

For me, however, the more significant concern is that my everyday power consumption patterns are quite irregular. I perform much of my professional tasks at my workstation, with my computer connected to my display, which simultaneously provides power. Yet, I enjoy relocating within my environment during the day, which entails disconnecting at unpredictable intervals. Additionally, I sometimes place my portable computer in my satchel and engage in tasks at a public library or a café. It would be desirable to ensure maximum charge when undertaking such activities.

The point is clear: Individual usage habits are not universally foreseeable. If this resonates with your experience, and you’d like to assume immediate oversight of your MacBook’s power replenishment, I suggest the complimentary, open-source application called Battery.

This application resides in your menu bar and compels your portable computer to limit its charge to 80 percent. You can, however, permit complete power replenishment whenever desired by selecting the menu bar emblem.

This approach will necessitate some forethought and vigilance from you. You will need to recall activating a full power-up prior to necessity, and then reactivate the restriction when it’s certain you won’t require it.

Nonetheless, for individuals akin to myself, who primarily utilizes their MacBook at their workstation, this appears to be a method to guarantee my power cell maintains optimal condition for the longest feasible duration.
