Inter Miami manager Javier Mascherano asserted that the reigning MLS Cup champions would maintain their focus, even after Lionel Messi’s significant role in establishing a new milestone.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or laureate, Messi, drew an audience of 72,026 spectators to DC United’s M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. This achievement surpassed the club’s home attendance record, which had been unbroken since 1997, by nearly 15,000, and secured a spot among the top 10 largest crowds for an individual MLS fixture.
“We typically don’t dwell on such matters – possibly because we’ve grown accustomed to the immense impact Leo creates,” stated Mascherano, whose team secured a 2-1 win, aided by Messi’s 899th professional goal. This marked their second triumph of the week, following a 4-2 success against Orlando City on Monday.
“Our internal discipline far outweighs any external influences. We set high expectations for ourselves, which drives our competitive approach in every match.”
How has Lionel Messi influenced the MLS?
To accommodate the high demand to witness the athletic legend Messi and his fellow players, United relocated the fixture to the Baltimore Ravens’ NFL stadium.
Following Rodrigo De Paul, another Argentina international, scoring to give Miami the lead, Messi found the net prior to the interval, rendering Tai Baribo’s response with fifteen minutes remaining ultimately irrelevant.
Ever since his arrival in Miami during 2023, Messi has garnered the MLS Most Valuable Player accolade on two occasions and attracted phenomenal attendances to matches.

Nearly 73,000 spectators witnessed a triumph against Sporting Kansas City in April 2024, subsequently followed by over 65,000 observing a victory over the New England Revolution, thus surpassing a host record that had persisted since 2002.
During their inaugural game of the current season last month, close to 76,000 supporters observed Miami’s 3-0 defeat to LAFC at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, marking the second-largest MLS attendance recorded to date.
“The entire phenomenon of stadiums being filled and football gaining significantly more popularity here in the United States is truly magnificent,” remarked ex-Argentina midfielder Mascherano.
“Leo’s presence has proven to be a pivotal element in this development. I do not believe it will alter our approach. We possess exceptionally skilled players accustomed to performing in grand arenas, thus they are adept at managing such circumstances.”
What awaits Lionel Messi and Inter Miami? Upcoming Matches, timetable
Inter Miami’s subsequent engagement is set for Wednesday against Nashville in the Concacaf Champions Cup, succeeded by an MLS journey to Charlotte.
“Eventually, we will need to commence regulating the players’ playing time,” explained Mascherano. “Competing every third day imposes considerable stress – particularly during this initial phase of the season, as we are consistently performing away from home [while Miami anticipates relocating to a new venue].”
Currently, they hold the fourth position with six points; merely New York City and Nashville, each having seven points, have accumulated more from their initial three encounters.
