On Wednesday, it was revealed that Zendesk is set to purchase Forethought, an enterprise specializing in creating software to streamline client support engagements. This transaction is anticipated to conclude prior to the end of March.
Even though artificial intelligence assistants, especially for client support, are exceedingly popular today, Forethought demonstrated remarkable foresight, operating significantly ahead of its era. Indeed, it emerged as the 2018 champion of TechCrunch Battlefield, our renowned nascent company presentation contest. To provide perspective, ChatGPT itself only became available in late 2022.
Subsequent to its triumph at Battlefield, Forethought stated it attracted prominent clients such as Upwork, Grammarly, Airtable, and Datadog. Furthermore, by 2025, it was facilitating over one billion client engagements each month.
The financial specifics of this agreement remained undisclosed. Forethought, as the firm reported during its $25 million funding round last year, had previously accumulated a cumulative investment of $115 million from supporters including Blue Cloud Ventures, NEA, Industry Ventures, Neo, Village Global, and Sound Ventures, alongside individual investors such as May Habib (Writer), Scott Wu (Cognition), Karan Goel (Cartesia), and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Deon Nicholas, Forethought AI’s co-creator and head of the board, characterized the takeover as a significant achievement in a LinkedIn update. He penned, “Over seven years ago, we embarked on a journey with a straightforward yet bold concept: that AI possessed the potential to revolutionize the client interaction journey. When we initially unveiled Forethought at TechCrunch Disrupt, that concept felt daring—perhaps even a little outlandish. Today, AI assistants are not merely reshaping client experiences; they are revolutionizing all conceivable sectors.”
A brief period prior to the takeover being publicized, Nicholas was featured on TechCrunch’s Build Mode podcast. During the episode, he elaborated on his strategies to triumph in Battlefield, how he secured his initial clients, and the future trajectory of autonomous technology, for instance, web navigation capabilities.
Incidentally, submissions for the 2026 TechCrunch Startup Battlefield are presently being accepted.

Zendesk, primarily recognized for its DIY client support solutions, has stated its intention to maintain assistance for Forethought’s current clientele and incorporate the nascent company’s innovations into its proprietary artificial intelligence offerings. These will encompass bespoke assistants, autonomously enhancing AI, vocal processing, and more independent functionalities. The enterprise asserts that this takeover fast-tracks its development trajectory by over twelve months.
Since November 2022, Zendesk has been privately owned, having been purchased by a group spearheaded by investment companies Hellman & Friedman and Permira in a $10.2 billion transaction. The lack of transparency regarding the conditions of this latest agreement is quite in line with its historical approach. Since its inception in 2007, Zendesk has completed approximately twelve takeovers, and on the rare occasions it has revealed a cost, the sums were relatively small, for instance, $29.8 million for instant messaging provider Zopim in 2014, and $45 million for data analysis enterprise BIME in 2015.
