Relive the thrilling initial period of the Champions League match featuring Newcastle and Barcelona
Anthony Elanga netted a brace, as Newcastle delivered an impressive first-half performance, equalizing their Champions League last-16 contest at 3-3 on aggregate. However, an injury-time penalty by Lamine Yamal then propelled Barcelona into the lead prior to halftime.
The fixture had stood even at 1-1 commencing the second leg at Camp Nou, and the subsequent events unfolded into one of the most sensational 45 minutes in recent Champions League history.
Raphinha opened the scoring merely six minutes in, tucking the ball beyond Aaron Ramsdale. This came after Lewis Hall lost his footing at a critical juncture, affording the Barcelona attacker ample time and space to deposit the ball into the lower-left netting.
Newcastle would not be fazed. Hall rectified his error nine minutes later, delivering an exquisite pass through the Barcelona backline. Elanga collected it, then dinked the ball over Joan Garcia on the volley from the right flank of the box.
It was a strike of exceptional caliber, serving as a reminder to the Catalan giants of how formidable Eddie Howe’s squad remains when launching counter-attacks.
Barcelona re-established their advantage within three minutes. Raphinha floated a set-piece to the far post, where Gerard Martin nodded down gently towards Marc Bernal, and the midfielder calmly converted from proximity – a goal that surely incensed Howe, given how easily it was given away.
Yet Newcastle simply would not be deterred. At the 28-minute mark, Hall threaded a pass to Harvey Barnes on the left, whose ground pass across the goalmouth was ideal for Elanga to tap into an empty goal at the far post.
Elanga achieved the rare feat of being only the second individual to bag a brace in a Champions League fixture away from home at Camp Nou, representing an English team, a feat last accomplished by Dwight Yorke for Manchester United in 1998.
The match was utterly enthralling; a crucial defensive intervention from Dan Burn prevented Raphinha and Lewandowski despite a two-on-one numerical advantage, Yamal fired high from eight yards with an open goal beckoning, and Cubarsi was cautioned for a tactical infringement on Gordon as Newcastle looked poised to counter.
Subsequently, the tension escalated. In the fifth minute of added time, referee Francois Letexier was summoned to the sideline screen following a video assistant referee review of a Kieran Trippier tackle against Raphinha.
Having scrutinized the replay, he awarded the penalty. Yamal duly scored, and Barcelona held a 3-2 cumulative lead at the interval.
