DLSS 5: Nvidia’s New Tech, Gamers’ New Nightmare, Developers’ New Headache

Gamers Hate Nvidia's DLSS 5. Developers Aren’t Crazy About It, Either

Following a day of extensive, formidable opposition, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang persisted in his assertion that gaming enthusiasts are “utterly mistaken” regarding DLSS. (It’s well-known that gamers dislike being told they are incorrect.) Yet, developers at Capcom and Ubisoft state they were unaware of the technical demonstration’s appearance and, according to Insider Gaming, discovered it concurrently with the general public, finding themselves equally astonished. (Nvidia, Ubisoft, and Capcom did not promptly respond to our inquiry for a statement.)

“I believe the response from gamers is comprehensible,” Marwan Mahmoud, a game developer at Incrypt, conveyed in an email to WIRED. “Some titles began depending excessively on these advancements instead of prioritizing adequate performance enhancement. From a creator’s viewpoint, the perception varies somewhat because one views DLSS as an aid rather than a fundamental remedy.”

The core issue for numerous individuals, including creators, is the universal application method of a technology capable of modifying graphics across diverse genres of games.

“An artist possesses a distinctive style, an artist has an artistic vision that you impart, and that’s something AI often fails to honor,” states Raúl Izquierdo, an independent game developer in Mexico, “Perhaps I do not desire my characters to be ‘yassified’.”

Bates concurs, expressing his view that not all games necessitate photorealistic fidelity. This perspective is similarly shared by game developer Sterling Reames, who has worked at Striking Distance Studios and Zynga. “Individuals simply desire superior gaming experiences,” Reames wrote in a message to WIRED. “I can state it no more simply than that.”

At GTC, Nvidia showcased its demonstration utilizing its most potent consumer-grade graphics processing units, two GeForce RTX 5090s. If Nvidia had highlighted the technology’s ability to conserve resources as its key advantage, thereby allowing legacy equipment to produce more striking visual effects, that might have held some merit.

“What purpose does it serve if it’s not implemented on less powerful equipment?” Izquierdo questions. “Should this have been executed on, say, an [RTX 2080 graphics card], for instance, I believe my view would be altered. Then, this would genuinely contribute to enhancing players’ enjoyment and overall experience, not merely to market video cards.”

Ultimately, Nvidia’s demonstration, and GTC in its entirety, represented a display of the corporation’s prowess within the artificial intelligence domain. Bates suggests that the public response primarily concerns humanity grappling with not merely traversing the uncanny valley, but also with the implications of arriving at the far side.

“At present, it is quite evident that this is an action they are compelled to undertake to exhibit their expertise as an AI firm,” Bates states. “Nevertheless, the fact remains that this will become the standard practice within a few years, and no one will give it a second thought. It is Jensen’s domain, and we merely exist within it.”
