The widespread enthusiasm for Fortnite may have peaked.

On Tuesday, Epic Games disclosed the termination of 1,000 staff members, attributing the decision to a drop in Fortnite player involvement.

In a message circulated to personnel, CEO Tim Sweeney conceded, “We have encountered difficulties in consistently providing the unique Fortnite appeal each season.”

The memo commenced, stating: “Today, we are reducing our workforce by more than 1000 Epic staff members.” “I regret that we find ourselves in this position once more. The decrease in Fortnite player participation, which commenced in 2025, indicates that our expenditures substantially exceed our revenues, necessitating significant reductions to maintain the company’s financial viability.”

Furthermore, Sweeney’s memorandum highlighted a more general vulnerability within the gaming sector impacting the firm’s financial health.

These reductions, combined with over $500 million in fiscal benefits derived from decreased expenditures on contracts and promotion, as well as vacant positions, are expected to position the company in “a more secure standing,” Sweeney stated.

These terminations represent the most recent development within the gaming domain, where enterprises have experienced diminished expansion as patrons opt for established game titles during periods of economic instability.

Nevertheless, even these, particularly games offering live services that rely on a continuous flow of fresh material to retain player interest, are beginning to exhibit vulnerabilities.

Sweeney penned that “Current economic circumstances are the most severe” encountered since the firm’s inception in 1991, further noting that “these workforce reductions bear no connection to artificial intelligence.”

This action signifies Epic’s second substantial wave of job cuts within a three-year span. During September 2023, the organization eliminated approximately 830 positions, constituting nearly 16% of its total personnel.

The video game industry has encountered escalating challenges. During September, Electronic Arts terminated hundreds of employees and halted production on a Titanfall game under development at its Respawn Entertainment division, as per journalistic accounts. Amazon’s more extensive workforce reductions late last year similarly impacted its gaming department.

Sweeney articulated, “Certain hurdles we confront are pervasive throughout the industry: decelerated expansion, reduced consumer expenditure, and more stringent cost considerations; contemporary consoles selling fewer units than their predecessors; and titles contending for attention amidst other progressively captivating forms of leisure.” “Moreover, some of our difficulties are specific to Epic.

“Even though Fortnite persists as one of the globe’s premier games, we have encountered obstacles in consistently imparting the distinctive Fortnite allure each season; we are merely in the nascent phases of re-establishing our mobile presence and fine-tuning Fortnite for the myriad smartphones worldwide; and by serving as the industry’s forefront, we have absorbed numerous blows in a struggle whose benefits are just beginning to materialize for both ourselves and all developers.”

The dismissed personnel from Epic Games are slated to receive “a minimum of four months’ foundational salary” and prolonged “Epic-funded health benefits,” as per the internal communication.
