Apple’s Lockdown Mode: The Spyware Shield Holds Strong

Apple says no one using Lockdown Mode has been hacked with spyware

Close to four years since introducing a protective functionality known as Lockdown Mode, Apple states it has not yet encountered an instance in which a device was compromised while these supplementary safety measures were activated.

“No triumphant mercenary spyware assaults have come to our attention against an Apple device with Lockdown Mode activated,” Sarah O’Rourke, an Apple representative, informed TechCrunch Friday.

This represents the technology behemoth’s latest confirmation that Apple gadgets employing Lockdown Mode are capable of resisting state-sponsored spyware intrusions, having initially asserted this a year subsequent to the protective function’s introduction.

In 2022, Apple unveiled Lockdown Mode, a voluntary suite of safety safeguards which disables specific functionalities within iPhones and other Apple gadgets, frequently misused to compromise targets using surveillance software. This particular defensive setting was specifically rolled out by Apple to aid vulnerable users in protecting themselves from dangers presented by government-developed spyware crafted by entities such as Intellexa, NSO Group, and Paragon Solutions.

Lately, Apple has acknowledged the potential for its users to be compromised by spyware and has become more assertive in informing users who have been subjected to such attacks.

Apple has dispatched multiple sets of alerts to individuals across more than 150 nations, informing them of potential spyware breaches, demonstrating the company’s current insight into these forms of intrusions. The exact number of users Apple has informed remains undisclosed, but it is reasonable to presume the figure extends to dozens, possibly surpassing that.

Advocacy groups for digital liberties, such as Amnesty International and the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab, have recorded various triumphant assaults on iPhone owners, with no reports indicating a circumvention of Lockdown Mode. In no less than two instances, Citizen Lab investigators openly stated witnessing Lockdown Mode effectively thwarting spyware intrusions, one executed with NSO’s Pegasus, the other utilizing Predator spyware, produced by an entity now affiliated with Intellexa.

In at least one recorded instance of a spyware intrusion aimed at iPhones, Google’s security experts indicated the surveillance software would cease attempts to compromise the target upon detecting Lockdown Mode, presumably to avoid discovery.

Patrick Wardle, a specialist in Apple cybersecurity and a vocal critic, asserts that Lockdown Mode represents a crucial capability, complicating matters for creators of surveillance software to target Apple users.

“I believe it is reasonable to state, Lockdown Mode stands as one of the most assertive, consumer-oriented fortification functionalities ever deployed,” he conveyed to TechCrunch.

Wardle clarified that through “reducing the potential target area,” Lockdown Mode eradicates numerous methods typically employed to compromise the iPhone, and compels creators of surveillance software to devise more intricate and costly methodologies.

“It nullifies whole delivery mechanisms/exploit categories,” he further stated, “given that it obstructs the majority of message attachment formats and limits WebKit functionalities. This truly signifies a substantial decrease in the remotely accessible attack surface, particularly for zero-click exploit sequences,” alluding to intrusions that can compromise individuals via the internet without any engagement from the affected party.

It is conceivable that Lockdown Mode might have been circumvented, and neither Apple nor autonomous researchers have detected the intrusion. However, considering Apple’s usual public reticence even under optimal circumstances, its most recent declaration represents a noteworthy achievement for Lockdown Mode.

For years, I have employed Lockdown Mode, and it rarely crosses my mind — save for when it presents alerts that can, at times, be perplexing. Certain deactivated functionalities necessitate an additional action, for instance, transferring and inserting links from SMS messages into your web browser. Hence, I, alongside numerous digital security specialists, advise anyone apprehensive about becoming a target of spyware or cyber assaults to enable Lockdown Mode.
