President Donald Trump has agreed to a request for an extension on a proposed 50% tariff on imports from the European Union, which he initially threatened would go into impact on June 1.

In a Fact Social put up on Sunday, Trump mentioned he acquired a name from European Fee President Ursula Von der Leyen requesting an extension on the June 1 tariff hike.

“I agreed to the extension — July 9, 2025 — It was my privilege to take action,” Trump wrote. “The Fee President mentioned that talks will start quickly. Thanks on your consideration to this matter!”

Von der Leyen took to X to say she had a “good name” with Trump and that Europe is “able to advance talks swiftly and decisively.”

On Friday, Trump threatened to impose a 50% tariff on imports from the European Union amid ongoing commerce negotiations.

“Their highly effective Commerce Limitations, Vat Taxes, ridiculous Company Penalties, Non-Financial Commerce Limitations, Financial Manipulations, unfair and unjustified lawsuits towards People Corporations, and extra, have led to a Commerce Deficit with the U.S. of greater than $250,000,000 a 12 months, a quantity which is completely unacceptable,” Trump mentioned. “…Subsequently, I’m recommending a straight 50% Tariff on the European Union, beginning on June 1, 2025.”

The EU tariff menace got here after Vice President JD Vance met with von der Leyen and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Might 18.

Earlier this week, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent mentioned President Donald Trump is making an attempt to “gentle a hearth” beneath the European Union.
