The Sweden striker was injured in the process of scoring for the Reds against Tottenham

Livepool have confirmed striker Alexander Isak has undergone surgery on the broken leg he suffered against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

Isak came on as a substitute to open the scoring for Arne Slot’s side in a 2-1 win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but was caught by Micky van de Ven immediately after striking the ball.

The Sweden international attempted to continue but was unable to play on and was eventually withdrawn.

The Reds confirmed the 26-year-old, who joined Liverpool from Newcastle in a club-record £125m deal in September, had sustained a fractured leg and had surgery on Monday.

The club did not outline a timescale on recovery but it is believed the forward could be sidelined for at least a few months.

“Alexander Isak today successfully underwent surgery on the injury he sustained on Saturday,” Liverpool said in a statement.

“After diagnosis, an operation was completed today on an ankle injury that included a fibula fracture.

“Isak’s rehabilitation will now continue at the AXA Training Centre, with no timeframe yet placed on his return.”

Slot’s side are next in action on 27 December when they host bottom club Wolves at Anfield, with the visitors still searching for their first top-flight of the campaign.

The champions are currently fifth in the table, level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea but 10 points adrift of leaders Arsenal.
