Last week, the reigning champion McIlroy was forced to withdraw from the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, pulling out before the third round.
McIlroy voiced discomfort from a “slight tweak” in his back and also mentioned experiencing muscle spasms on the driving range.
The current Masters victor only reached TPC Sawgrass for The Players on Wednesday, a step McIlroy took to ensure he could get additional care from his physiotherapist.
However, this postponement prevented McIlroy from finishing a practice round at the venue where he bested J.J. Spaun in an exciting play-off the previous year.
When questioned about whether he would retain his title, McIlroy remained undecided.
“It [my back] feels improved compared to before,” McIlroy stated on Wednesday.
“Approximately 20 hours remain until my scheduled tee time tomorrow, so we shall observe the situation.”
“I am proceeding somewhat on an hourly basis, but the sensation is better – that is my sole comment. On Saturday morning at Bay Hill’s range, I was unable to stand and address the ball, and it is clearly an improvement from that.”
“Thus, it’s likely a decision made closer to game time, yet every sign suggests a positive trend. I hope for a restful night. The medication is performing remarkably, and I’ll continue from there.”

McIlroy elaborated on the specifics of his back injury, which limited him to hitting up to a six-iron before he met with the media.
Such a limitation would imply McIlroy is grappling with a significant level of pain, but that is apparently not the situation.
“I wouldn’t even label it pain – I would describe it more as sensitivity,” McIlroy clarified. “Even just striking balls there for a brief period, I just feel like my muscles around the area are getting a little fatigued.”
“My right adductor began to cramp slightly, but it’s manageable – it’s anticipated. But it’s more akin to sensitivity rather than actual pain.”
The Northern Irishman benefits from a deep understanding of what is necessary for triumph at Sawgrass, as he aims to emulate Scottie Scheffler and become only the second golfer to successfully defend the PGA Tour’s most prestigious title. A win would also place McIlroy alongside Jack Nicklaus in achieving three victories at the event.
“I’ve been competing here since 2009, so it’s not as if I’m unfamiliar with the location,” McIlroy added.
“The setup this year appears quite distinct from previous March years.”
“I would much rather practice my short game and putting on the actual course than on the dedicated practice area, simply to gain a better sense for the required shots. Lines off tees and club selections – I am aware of all that, but it’s about feeling how the ball reacts on the greens.”
When questioned about the potential hazards of competing while injured, McIlroy responded: “It’s not structural, it’s not related to a joint, it’s fine. It’s purely muscular discomfort and fatigue. Based on what I’ve been informed, and I will, of course, heed the professionals, there’s nothing I can do that will exacerbate it.”
“I do not believe playing carries a risk of causing any damage.”
