Having transitioned from the Pixel A-series earbuds, which debuted in 2021, to the Pixel Buds Pro 2, two points became strikingly obvious: the A-series model offers surprisingly excellent audio for its modest price point under $100, and the Pixel Buds Pro 2 proved to be precisely what I sought in an upgrade. These new buds are even more compact and incorporate a silicone wing for a secure hold, while their enhanced functionalities — superior sound quality, active noise cancellation, and a transparency mode — allow them to compete effectively with top contenders. For those contemplating a near-future upgrade, this particular model has just reverted to its historically lowest cost of $169.99 (previously $229.99) across Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart (with restricted color choices), and the Google Store.
Compatible with any Bluetooth-enabled device, these wireless earphones function universally, though their optimal performance is achieved when linked with a Pixel smartphone featuring newer Android iterations. Battery statuses for both individual buds and their charging case are accessible via a homescreen widget or the dedicated Pixel Buds application. Each earbud allows for personalized touch commands to execute actions such as engaging the Gemini-driven voice assistant or modifying noise management settings. Disabling all touch functionalities presents an alternative, as does enabling head movements, like nodding to accept an incoming call. Furthermore, a significant portion of these settings can be tailored using Google’s web-based partner application designed for personal computers.
My sole concern with the Pixel Buds Pro 2 arises from the fact that none of the provided silicone eartips remain securely in my ears (despite an initial fit, the natural oils within my ear canals consistently dislodge them during activities like walking, speaking, or eating). Nevertheless, a set of $16.99 memory foam tips sourced from the curiously-named Amazon vendor, Tang Town, proved to be an effective solution.
