## A Tempestuous Maiden Voyage: Scotland’s New Ferry Faces Early Challenges

The much-anticipated MV *Isle of Islay*, poised to become a vital artery in Scotland’s ferry network, has encountered an eventful and challenging delivery journey from its Turkish birthplace. Barely days after its official handover, the brand-new vessel has not only battled ferocious storms but also undertaken an unexpected rescue mission, all before reaching its intended Scottish home.

This modern addition, the first of four new ferries currently under construction in Turkey, is charting a course fraught with the unpredictable nature of the open sea, testing both its advanced capabilities and the seasoned crew onboard.

### Unforeseen Heroics: A Rescue at Sea

The crew of the MV *Isle of Islay* found themselves called into action far sooner than anyone expected, demonstrating remarkable readiness during an impromptu rescue operation. While traversing its maiden passage north, the ferry successfully intervened in an emergency, saving an individual from perilous maritime conditions.

Louis de Wolff, CalMac’s fleet management director, lauded the crew’s swift and decisive actions. “CalMac crews are exceptionally well-trained to act quickly in sea rescues, frequently supporting coastguard efforts in Scottish waters,” he stated. “Though none of us anticipated the MV *Isle of Islay* being involved in a rescue so soon after delivery, it stands as a powerful testament to our crew’s professionalism that the individual was brought to safety from dangerous seas and weather in mere minutes.”

### Battling the Elements: An Odyssey of Delays

The voyage from the Cemre shipyard in Turkey, where Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL) officially took ownership last week, has proven anything but smooth. A dedicated CalMac crew is steering the vessel on its repositioning journey, a passage typically estimated to take around two weeks, heavily dependent on prevailing weather conditions.

However, the ship’s itinerary has already been significantly altered by Mother Nature’s fury. For several days last week, the area was pummeled by relentless winds, consistently gusting above 30 knots and peaking beyond 50 knots. These extreme conditions compelled the ferry to seek refuge, anchoring safely off the east coast of Morocco. Once the tumultuous seas subside and winds abate, the MV *Isle of Islay* is expected to resume its northerly trajectory before undertaking the notoriously challenging Bay of Biscay crossing.

### A Glimpse into the Future: Enhancing Connectivity

Upon its eventual arrival in Scottish waters, the MV *Isle of Islay* will embark on a comprehensive schedule of local trials. This program includes vital visits to multiple ports and harbours across the region, ensuring it is fully prepared before officially entering passenger service on the Clyde and Hebrides network.

#### Capacity and Resilience
This modern vessel is poised to revolutionize connectivity for the Islay and Jura routes. Designed to accommodate up to 450 passengers and either 100 cars or 14 commercial vehicles, it represents a substantial increase in capacity. Furthermore, its introduction is anticipated to bolster overall fleet resilience by facilitating the strategic redeployment of other vessels throughout the wider CalMac network.

### Celebrating a New Era: Community Welcome on Islay

Anticipation is building on Islay, where a special community event is being planned to mark the ferry’s arrival. This celebration will culminate in the vessel’s formal naming ceremony, featuring a unique touch: a special edition bottle of Ardnahoe whisky will be used for the traditional christening, symbolizing a new chapter for island connectivity.
