President Donald Trump has declared a 50% tariff on all Brazilian imports, separate from sector-specific tariffs, starting on Aug. 1.

In a letter to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva that he posted on his Reality Social account on Wednesday, Trump cited the South American nation’s “unfair” commerce relationship with the U.S., its therapy of former President Jair Bolsonaro, its assaults on free elections and violations of People’ free speech rights as causes for the tariffs.

“Due partly to Brazil’s insidious assaults on free elections, and the elemental free speech rights of People … beginning on August 1, 2025, we are going to cost Brazil a tariff of fifty% on any and all Brazilian merchandise despatched into america, separate from all sectoral tariffs,” Trump wrote within the letter. “Items transshipped to evade this 50% Tariff can be topic to that increased Tariff.”
