The United States, co-hosting the World Cup, endured a heavy defeat inflicted by Belgium, who emerged victorious with a 5-2 scoreline at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday.

Weston McKennie gave the American side an early lead during the initial period, however, the visiting team responded with a quintet of consecutive goals attributable to Zeno Debast, Amadou Onana, a Charles De Ketelaere spot-kick, and Dodi Lukebakio, coming off the bench, netting twice.

Patrick Agyemang notched a late goal for the home team, yet it offered scant comfort as the erratic performance streak of manager Mauricio Pochettino’s squad persists, merely months before the grand tournament commences.

A Balanced Initial Period

Belgium saw the return of their influential figure, Kevin De Bruyne; nonetheless, the opening opportunity to score was created by the home side.

Benefitting from ample room near the penalty area, Fulham’s Antonee Robinson compelled a superb save from Manchester United’s Senne Lammens guarding Belgium’s net, after a clever give-and-go involving Malik Tillman and Christian Pulisic preceded the shot.

Lammens and Tillman were once more central to the action shortly thereafter, as Tillman’s corner kick navigated a cluster of players to reach McKennie, who was left unattended, but once more, the Belgian keeper intervened to thwart an almost certain goal.

Conversely, Matt Turner, stationed in goal for the US, had to make a stop after a long-range strike from De Bruyne took a deflection off Mark McKenzie.

In the 37th minute, the away team saw a goal disallowed following Jeremy Doku’s cross, which was ultimately nudged into the net by De Ketelaere’s arm.

However, precisely as Belgium appeared to be gaining momentum and posing a threat, the opposition conceded when McKennie, once more, found himself entirely unattended following a corner kick, and on this occasion, he clinically converted from a short distance.

Yet, their advantage endured for a mere six minutes. Just before the interval, Debast unleashed a shot from afar, bypassing Turner; his powerful low shot evading the New England Revolution loan player and settling into the far corner of the goal.

Belgium Dominates Following the Interval

Following the restart, Pulisic arguably ought to have capitalized more effectively as he skillfully weaved through the Belgian backline, however, his attempt was wayward, sending the ball benignly above the crossbar.

The home side began the second period energetically, yet it was the away team that seized the advantage thanks to Onana, the Aston Villa player scoring from just outside the box, having been assisted by Alexis Saelemaekers, subsequent to further commendable play by Doku.

Barely five minutes subsequent to that, Belgium augmented their lead following the ball being deemed to have made contact with the hand of US captain Tim Ream, and De Ketelaere successfully dispatched the subsequent penalty.

The visiting side was now rampant in Atlanta and secured a fourth goal shortly after the sixty-minute mark, as Lukebakio, brought on from the bench, executed a delightful strike beyond Turner.

Lukebakio scored his second, and Belgium’s fifth, in the dying moments, prior to the US registering a comfort goal with only three minutes left in regulation time, subsequent to Ricardo Pepi dispossessing Youri Tielemans and providing Agyemang with a simple tap-in.

This marked the final event of the match. For Belgium, the triumph was decisive. Conversely for the US, this outcome will scarcely uplift the aspirations of an anticipating country leading into this summer’s global football spectacle.
