De Zerbi’s High-Wire Act

Ex-Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood harbors doubts that Roberto De Zerbi is the most suitable candidate for the club’s new head coach position in the immediate future.

Information surfacing today indicates that De Zerbi has set aside his concerns regarding taking charge of the relegation-endangered club and is currently engaged in discussions about succeeding Igor Tudor, who was dismissed yesterday after a mere 44 days in his role.

Should these negotiations culminate in a consensus, De Zerbi will be afforded seven matches to rescue Spurs from demotion. Presently, they sit a solitary point and position above the relegation zone.

Sherwood, who led Tottenham for half a year during the 2013/14 campaign, posits that De Zerbi is the appropriate individual for the long haul but expresses misgivings that his attacking philosophy will be suitable for a squad contending for its very existence.

He conveyed to Sky Sports News: “I genuinely admire him. I appreciate his character. I remarked ages ago that he would be the one to take the reins at Tottenham.

“I would have selected him ahead of Mauricio Pochettino for an extended period because he utilizes the kind of approach that Tottenham supporters desire. However, not at this juncture. That approach isn’t requisite currently; what’s necessary now is a dependable custodian. This appointment is hardly that.

“They risk being exposed and suffering substantial defeats in certain matches – such crushing losses are unacceptable between now and the season’s conclusion.”

Obstinate De Zerbi Poised to Be ‘Challenging’ at Tottenham

De Zerbi finds himself unattached following his departure from Marseille in February, yet he remains highly esteemed in England subsequent to a productive tenure with Brighton. The Italian is recognized as a fiery individual, and Sherwood asserts that the club is not opting for a simple path by bringing him in.

He further stated: “We are aware of this man’s unyielding nature. He is difficult to manage, but I admire him for that, as he possesses an independent mind and executes things according to his own convictions; that constitutes my sole concern.

“I believe if he manages to secure their survival, he is an ideal coach for Tottenham to guide them into the future.

“The foremost objective is simply to ensure their top-flight status. He wouldn’t embody the crisis manager type who takes charge for this particular seven-match period.

“He desired a respite after Marseille in February, yet why wasn’t he appointed then? Why wasn’t he brought in prior to Igor Tudor? He would have been afforded an extra seven fixtures to contest, and then I would have held absolute certainty that he would preserve their position in the division.

“Clearly, they had no interest in him at that point. He was unattached, yet they didn’t desire his services.”

What Led to Tudor’s Dismissal?

Tudor’s brief period in charge spanned merely 44 days, with outcomes exhibiting no indication of amelioration subsequent to his succession of Thomas Frank.

The club had intended to dismiss him after the mortifying 3-0 home loss to fellow survival contenders Nottingham Forest last Sunday, but they chose to postpone the action while he coped with the demise of his father.

During his brief tenure, Tudor couldn’t secure a single Premier League victory, accruing merely one point from five matches. Although they defeated Atletico Madrid in the Champions League round-of-16 return fixture, this triumph turned out to be a deceptive hope, as Forest mercilessly highlighted their deficiencies.

Tottenham has endured a 13-match winless streak in the league, representing their most dismal sequence since the 1934/35 season, which saw them demoted. An initial drop from the premier division, their first since 1977, now looms as a tangible prospect.

Tottenham’s Immediate Future: Can Spurs Evade Relegation?

Spurs persist as the solitary Premier League squad still seeking a victory in the premier division throughout 2026, and the global fixture pause signifies they will not compete again until their away match against 11th-placed Sunderland on April 12.

Subsequent to their loss to Forest, bookmakers positioned them as the fourth-likeliest candidates for relegation, trailing only Wolves, Burnley, and West Ham.

Previously, statistical analysts at Opta assigned Tottenham a 27.1% probability of demotion and forecast their survival at West Ham’s detriment, with an anticipated finish one or two points ahead of the Hammers.
