The FIFA head was an observer for Iran’s contest in Turkey.

FIFA chief Gianni Infantino on Tuesday affirmed that Iran will participate in the World Cup, notwithstanding the disagreement between the nation and the United States, as he witnessed their dominant 5-0 exhibition victory against Costa Rica.

Infantino acted as an onlooker at the fixture in Turkey, where, during the national anthems, Iranian footballers displayed images of certain casualties from US and Israeli aerial bombardments.

Iran’s entire set of pool matches is slated to take place in the USA; however, the Iranian Football Federation has petitioned for these fixtures to be relocated to Mexico.

Yet, commenting midway through Iran’s decisive triumph, Infantino conveyed to AFP: “Iran will participate in the World Cup. This is our reason for being here. We are thrilled because they constitute an exceptionally formidable team, and I am quite pleased.”

“I’ve observed the squad, conversed with the athletes and their trainer, thus all matters are satisfactory.”

Infantino further stated that Iran’s games “shall proceed at their designated venues, as per the allocation.”

Mehdi Taremi netted a brace and contributed a setup, allowing Iran to comfortably secure the win.

Netherlands Content Themselves with a Tie

The Netherlands squad was constrained to a 1-1 tie by Ecuador in their second-to-last exhibition match before their departure for the World Cup.

The Oranje had secured a notable 2-1 victory against Norway the preceding week, yet found themselves thwarted by the South Americans, notwithstanding their second-minute advantage courtesy of a Willian Pacho self-inflicted score.

However, the match took a turn when Denzel Dumfries fouled Gonzalo Plata, resulting in the sole back being swiftly issued a red card.

Plata subsequently earned a spot-kick after being fouled by Netherlands goalkeeper Mark Flekken, who was unable to stop Enner Valencia’s ensuing penalty shot.

Ecuador could not capitalize further on their numerical superiority, though stalemates against Morocco and the Netherlands signify a commendable period for La Tri on the global stage.

Netherlands national football team

The Netherlands squad will confront Algeria at De Kuip in June for their send-off match prior to journeying to North America.

Morocco, who reached the last four at the 2022 World Cup, emerged 2-1 victorious against Paraguay, owing to strikes from Bilal El Khannouss and Neil El Aynaoui.

Senegal, divested of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations championship this month in the ongoing aftermath of their disputed championship match with Morocco, were triumphant 3-1 against Gambia; however, a loss befell another African contender destined for this summer’s World Cup.

South Africa endured a 2-1 defeat to Panama in the subsequent encounter between the two sides within a five-day span. Their initial match concluded in a 1-1 stalemate.

Marcel Sabitzer netted the sole point of the contest, leading Austria to defeat South Korea 1-0, concurrently, their adjacent nation, Switzerland, tied 0-0 with Norway.

Additional Outcomes

  • Serbia 2-1 Saudi Arabia
  • Haiti 1-1 Iceland
  • Jordan 2-2 Nigeria
  • Algeria 0-0 Uruguay
