Donnarumma was unable to deliver any heroic performances during Italy’s shootout defeat against Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Gianluigi Donnarumma has voiced his deep anguish after Italy’s inability to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup, confessing he “shed tears from the immense sorrow” that followed their play-off loss to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The aspirations of Italy were extinguished when a 1-1 stalemate was succeeded by a resounding 4-1 defeat in the penalty shootout, thereby signifying a third consecutive absence from the World Cup for the quadruple champions.
Donnarumma, having executed several crucial blocks to sustain his team’s contention, appeared visibly distressed at the final whistle and required intervention after he sought to challenge opposing players.
Pondering the outcome, the captain of Italy penned: “Last night, following the game, I wept. I wept due to the frustration of being unable to guide Italy to its rightful position.
“I wept from the profound grief I am experiencing, alongside the entire Azzurri squad, a team I am honored to lead, and I am aware that you, the devotees of our national side, are sharing this sentiment as well.”
Italy could not capitalize on crucial penalty attempts, with Pio Esposito and Bryan Cristante both failing to score; concurrently, Donnarumma proved incapable of stopping any of Bosnia’s spot-kicks.

Presently aged 27, Donnarumma remains without a World Cup appearance and must await at least 2030 for a subsequent chance. He commenced his senior international career at just 17 but has witnessed Italy miss the mark in qualification endeavors subsequently.
Notwithstanding the reversal, he urged solidarity for the future.
“Considerable fortitude, fervor, and determination would be necessary” to restore Italy “to its rightful place”.
“Perpetually have conviction; this constitutes the impetus for progression. For life is apt to recompense those who exert maximum effort, unreservedly.
“And from this point, we ought to recommence. Unitedly. Anew.”
