PHOENIX — Even though UCLA is poised for its initial showing in an NCAA final match, head coach Cori Close mentioned on Saturday that she sensed her team experienced greater strain the previous year, during their first Final Four.
Having been defeated in the semifinals twelve months prior, the Bruins’ journey to this year’s country-wide championship contest was fueled by that setback. They are set to confront South Carolina on Sunday. Close remarked that the squad’s prior involvement has significantly aided them in tackling this particular match in a markedly distinct manner.
“In the previous year, we found ourselves responding to every event, rather than foreseeing them,” Close stated during a press briefing forecasting the decisive match. She added, “However, having participated in this before, our preparation process was completely altered. I believed we could be more methodical in how we place our athletes advantageously to be victorious.”
Close observed that several of her veteran athletes from the prior season were informing newcomers to the Final Four about the anticipated challenges. “That truly changes everything,” she emphasized.
UCLA is set to confront an experienced South Carolina team, one that has performed at this level on numerous occasions. The Gamecocks have reached six consecutive Final Fours and are now contending in their fourth national title game. UCLA, meanwhile, has not secured a nationwide championship since 1978, a period predating the NCAA’s supervision of women’s basketball.
Close indicated her team has adopted a professional demeanor, choosing not to celebrate in the locker room subsequent to defeating Texas 51-44, which secured their berth in the final game.
“We truly arrived at this competition highly concentrated,” Close affirmed. She continued, “We are convinced that the task remained unfinished. Our desire is to seek an opportunity to contend for a countrywide title, and to do so at the most elite standards. I don’t believe there was an exhalation of relief, such as, ‘Oh, thank goodness we achieved that subsequent milestone.’ We aim to strive for victory.”
Gabriela Jaquez, who has spent her whole career with UCLA, expressed that the squad is considerably more composed and assured this year.
“We possess a feeling of tranquility, knowing we are destined to participate here,” Jaquez asserted. “We are aware we’ve invested the effort. We understand we’re readied. We intend to be attentive, and we will emerge poised to perform.”
Guard Kiki Rice emphasized that the team adopted a wholly distinct methodology this year, and their lack of prior participation in a title game will not constitute a determinant.
“I believed we are just significantly more ready,” Rice stated. “We understand that we must step onto the court and contend, without allowing the significance of the match to divert our attention from the objective we must accomplish. We will be prepared.”
