Key Takeaways:

  • AI for Initial Attraction:Content creator Ben Guez leverages sophisticated AI agents (OpenClaw, Claude) to automate the creation and distribution of highly targeted Instagram reels, feigning emotional support for World Cup fans. This controversial strategy has garnered over a million views and hundreds of DMs, notably directing prospects to his language learning app, Canary.
  • From Logistics to Ethical Lines:Beyond Guez’s provocative approach, individuals are integrating AI into various dating stages. Jeff Weisbein uses OpenClaw for practical date planning (e.g., finding restaurants), while others, like Cailey, even automate breakup messages. This highlights a spectrum of comfort with AI intervention, with many drawing lines at AI-mediated conversations or swiping.
  • Security and the “Human-in-the-Loop”:The increasing use of AI in personal spheres raises significant privacy and security concerns. Lazer Cohen, co-founder of NanoClaw, emphasizes the critical need for “human-in-the-loop” approval to prevent unauthorized data access, profile creation, or the leakage of personal information, advocating for responsible AI integration in sensitive areas.

In the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, innovation knows no bounds – even when it comes to the notoriously complex world of human relationships. What once seemed like fodder for science fiction is now becoming reality, as tech-savvy individuals harness AI agents like OpenClaw and Claude to navigate the intricacies of dating, from initial attraction to the awkward farewell. The results range from the surprisingly effective to the ethically questionable, pushing the boundaries of what’s considered acceptable in the pursuit of connection.

The AI Casanova: Ben Guez’s Automated Approach to Romance

At the forefront of this intriguing trend is Ben Guez, a content creator and startup founder who openly admits to having “a bunch of potential international wives in [his] DMs.” His secret? A meticulously crafted, automated script combining OpenClaw, Claude code, and Instagram trial reels. “I think it’s crazy, like the potential is insane right now,” Guez told TechCrunch, a sentiment echoed by the sheer volume of engagement his system has generated. “I’m not sure if everyone’s gonna think it’s good, but I mean, it’s working.”

Guez’s ingenious method begins with OpenClaw, an open-source AI agent, diligently tracking World Cup match results. Immediately after a game, OpenClaw triggers Claude to generate and post a nearly identical Instagram “trial reel.” The video consistently features Guez staring out a train window with a dejected expression, accompanied by a caption tailored to the specific match: “I can’t believe {COUNTRY} lost… If any {COUNTRY} girls need emotional support… my DMs are open.”

Despite making this post over a dozen times, each iteration targeting a different nation, Guez’s public profile remains uncluttered. This is thanks to Instagram’s “trial reels” feature, which does not display on a creator’s main feed. The results speak for themselves: in just a few days, Guez has accumulated over one million views and received more than 200 direct messages. What makes this even more remarkable is that Guez explicitly states in his profile that he will only respond to DMs sent via Canary, his AI language learning app, effectively turning his dating strategy into a user acquisition funnel.

While one must admire Guez’s audacious application of “work smarter, not harder,” the immediate question arises: wouldn’t these women feel manipulated once they realize his professed concern for, say, Tunisian soccer is entirely automated? Guez dismisses this concern, claiming the reactions are largely positive. “They’re not feeling angry, they’re more impressed, like, ‘Oh, you’re thinking outside of the box, you’re a genius,’” he asserts. “I think as long as you’re open [about] what you’re doing, I think it’s fine.” While TechCrunch could not independently verify the actual sentiments of these women, Guez’s confidence highlights a fascinating intersection of transparency, impressiveness, and potential deception in AI-assisted interactions.

Beyond the Stunt: AI for Practical Date Planning

Guez isn’t the only one leveraging AI for romantic pursuits, though his methods certainly stand out. Many others are finding more conventional, albeit still innovative, ways to integrate AI into their dating lives. Jeff Weisbein, founder of a tech PR firm, uses OpenClaw to streamline the logistical headache of planning dates in unfamiliar territories.

“I’m meeting women who are in various parts of South Florida, so I don’t know all of the restaurants or things to do,” Weisbein explained to TechCrunch. “I have my bot just kind of do all the research and make a document with links to why it’s a choice for whatever type of date it is.” When informed of Guez’s elaborate scheme, Weisbein burst into laughter, quipping, “I guess I’m not leveraging OpenClaw to the fullest. But definitely in the realm of using OpenClaw to facilitate a task that I would manually have to do otherwise.”

Like Guez, Weisbein is transparent about his use of AI, though he did recount one instance where it backfired when a date declared, “I hate AI agents.” For Weisbein, asking OpenClaw for happy hour recommendations in Fort Lauderdale is functionally similar to a manual Google search. However, he draws a firm line at allowing AI to mediate actual conversations or automated swiping. “I have seen people create bots and ways to swipe using OpenClaw, and I wouldn’t do that. They say it’s a numbers game, but if that’s what it takes… that seems like a pretty terrible way to do it,” he stated. “I feel like you shouldn’t delegate your communication when you’re in a relationship with someone to AI.” This sentiment highlights a common ethical boundary: AI for research and logistics, but not for the intimate core of human interaction.

The Uncomfortable Edge: AI for Relationship Endings

While most people hesitate to let AI meddle once a genuine connection forms, some find utility in its detached efficiency for the less pleasant aspects of dating. A tech worker named Cailey confessed that she turns to Claude when it’s time to end a flirtation. “I started using Claude and created an automation that crafts ‘I no longer wish to see you’ messages based on a few key terms I would enter about the date. It’d then automatically send them for me at random times so that I wouldn’t feel the anxiety of when to send,” she shared with TechCrunch.

Her system worked “really well” until a particularly awkward encounter: “I mentioned it to someone I was on a date with, who I then had to send an automated message to, and he asked if he was talking to Claude or Cailey.” This humorous yet poignant anecdote leaves us to ponder: what’s worse—getting ghosted, or getting broken up with by an AI?

Ethical Minefields and Security Imperatives

The rise of AI agents like OpenClaw, which went viral this spring for its broad potential, has not been without its critics. Security advocates have consistently warned users about the inherent dangers of granting an AI assistant unilateral control over personal accounts and sensitive information. The implications, particularly when outsourcing personal relationships to AI, are steep.

Lazer Cohen, co-founder of NanoClaw—a security-focused alternative to OpenClaw—is a vocal proponent of caution, even though his company itself advertises date planning as a potential use case. “Whenever you’re giving an agent access to personal information and accounts, you need human-in-the-loop approval,” Cohen stressed to TechCrunch. He cites alarming precedents: “We’ve all heard the stories of OpenClaw creating dating profiles for people without their knowledge or consent, or OpenClaw dating coaches spilling to other groups that they’re being used as a dating coach too.” These concerns underscore the critical need for robust security protocols and user consent in an era where AI agents are becoming increasingly autonomous.

Interestingly, NanoClaw has found its way into Cohen’s own love life, though in a significantly more wholesome manner than mass-producing sorrowful soccer reels. “My wife and I personally use our NanoClaw assistant, Rosie, to manage the schedules of our five children,” he shared. This application highlights a beneficial and less controversial use of AI in personal life, underscoring that while “claws” are widely discussed for initial dating phases, they are also finding practical use in the child-rearing phase of relationships.

The Bottom Line

The integration of AI into our personal lives, particularly in the realm of dating and relationships, is no longer a distant concept but a rapidly evolving reality. From Ben Guez’s audacious, app-driving reels to Jeff Weisbein’s pragmatic date planning and Cailey’s anxiety-reducing breakup automation, AI is undeniably reshaping how we connect, court, and even disengage. While the technology offers unparalleled efficiency and innovative solutions, it simultaneously casts a spotlight on critical ethical questions concerning authenticity, consent, and the very essence of human interaction. As AI becomes more sophisticated and intertwined with our intimate spheres, the onus will increasingly be on users, developers, and policymakers to establish clear boundaries, prioritize privacy, and ensure that technology truly serves to enrich, rather than complicate or compromise, our most personal connections. The future of romance, it seems, will be a delicate dance between human heart and artificial intelligence.
