CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy — Italian athlete Federica Brignone claimed her second gold medal within four days at her native Winter Olympics, prevailing in the women’s giant slalom on Sunday. Meanwhile, Mikaela Shiffrin once again did not achieve a podium finish.
The event has not yet officially concluded, as numerous lower-ranked participants are still set to tackle the course. However, Brignone remains in the lead, following the performance of the initial 30 quickest skiers.
The 35-year-old Brignone, who on Thursday had secured her debut Olympic gold by winning the downhill, took the lead after the first segment of the giant slalom. Following the second segment, she held a 0.62-second lead over Sweden’s reigning champion Sara Hector and Norway’s Thea Louise Stjernesund.
Shiffrin, the esteemed U.S. competitor, found herself in the eleventh spot, having now missed out on a medal across eight consecutive Olympic competitions since the 2018 Winter Games.
