TEMPE, Ariz. — Mike Trout, the celebrated power-hitter, has expressed his desire to revert to the central outfield position for the Los Angeles Angels, further stating he will forgo the World Baseball Classic due to coverage concerns.
The eleven-time baseball luminary, who has been afflicted with injuries since 2021, contends that his accustomed role is less physically taxing than the peripheral outfield areas, defying conventional wisdom.
Last season, Trout achieved his highest number of appearances since 2019, participating in 130 contests. The three-time American League MVP initially commenced 22 of his first 29 games in right field, but a knee ailment benched him for a month. Upon his comeback in late May, the 34-year-old was solely utilized as a designated hitter.
Trout tallied 26 home runs but batted merely .232, which represented the lowest batting mark of his career by a significant margin for seasons with a minimum of 400 at-bats.
While he featured in left field during his initial years, he served as a center fielder for 11 successive campaigns prior to his transition to right. Over the preceding two years, ailments confined Trout to just 111 games.
Trout indicated that discussions with rookie skipper Kurt Suzuki have featured the concept of his comeback to center field.
“I believe I perform optimally when situated in center,” Trout conveyed to journalists at the team’s preseason camp on Monday. “Should I be required to shift to a corner outfield position, I will do so.”
Trout maintains that a move back to the central field will prove beneficial for his well-being.
He elaborated, “When I occupied center, it was physically less strenuous than the corners. Frankly, in right field, I felt like I was covering a lot of ground. Conversations with other outfielders reveal they sometimes share an identical sentiment: center is less taxing on your lower limbs. I simply feel… more assured in center.”
Trout, who participated in his sole WBC three years prior, had previously conveyed his keenness to rejoin the competition before coverage concerns surfaced.
“It’s disheartening,” Trout stated. “I was eager to compete again alongside all the teammates.”
Meanwhile, the up-and-coming Boston outfielder Roman Anthony has been designated as a Team USA substitute due to injury, stepping in for Arizona’s Corbin Carroll, who is suffering from a fractured bone in his right hand.
