Vinicius Jr found himself embroiled in another instance of purported racism as Real Madrid triumphed over Benfica
Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni has refuted claims of racially insulting Real Madrid ace Vinicius Jr, asserting that the Brazilian “misunderstood” his remarks during yesterday evening’s Champions League match.

As the players geared up to resume play, Vinicius swiftly approached the referee to allege Prestianni uttered a racist epithet while obscuring his mouth with his jersey.
He subsequently engaged in a discussion with Benfica coach Jose Mourinho. The contest concluded 1-0, granting Madrid the upper hand as they journey to the Santiago Bernabeu for the second leg fixture next week.
What allegations are Prestianni facing?
The Argentine is alleged to have employed the term “mono,” which translates to monkey in Spanish.
Nevertheless, the 20-year-old maintained firmly that this was not the case, stating Vinicius Jr had mistakenly understood his comment.
Posting on social media platforms, Prestianni conveyed: “I wish to clarify that I never once insulted Vinícius Jr, who, regrettably, misinterpreted something he believes he overheard. I’ve never been racist towards anyone, and I lament the menaces directed at me from the Real Madrid players.”

Mourinho has faced criticism for implying Vinicius Jr showed contempt for the local supporters through his excessive celebration of a superb shot.

“This club is, by definition, anything but racist. If in his perception there was something regarding that matter, this is Benfica.
“They [Vinicius and Prestianni] presented differing accounts. But I do not credit either version fully. I aim to be an impartial observer.”

The match official’s submission will be forwarded to European football’s administrative authority, UEFA, who will then make a ruling.

Vinicius Jr’s colleagues denounce Prestianni
Vinicius Jr has been exposed to racial insults previously, and his fellow players were swift to defend the 25-year-old.
