Towards the close of last year, Alex Bores, a New York Assembly member, found himself the focus of an initiative launched by an AI-advocacy super PAC, intent on impeding his congressional aspirations. This organization, named Leading the Future, possesses over $100 million, contributed by backers such as Andreessen Horowitz, OpenAI President Greg Brockman, the AI search startup Perplexity, and Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale.

Bores’ retort was straightforward: ‘Let’s have it.’ Currently, he commands the strength to support his bold declaration.

Public First Action, a political action committee supported by a $20 million contribution from Anthropic, is allocating $450,000 to bolster Bores’ candidacy in the contest for New York’s 12th congressional district, as reported by Bloomberg. Similar to its competitor, this committee champions AI, yet it advocates for an alternative perspective—one emphasizing openness, security benchmarks, and civic supervision.

Concurrently, Leading the Future, the industry-backed PAC, has already invested $1.1 million in advertisements criticizing Bores, primarily owing to his sponsorship of New York’s RAISE Act. This legislative measure mandates that prominent AI developers reveal their safety procedures and report significant instances of system abuse.
