DETROIT — Victor Wembanyama amassed 21 points, 17 rebounds, and six blocks, while Devin Vassell contributed 28 points, as the San Antonio Spurs triumphed over the Detroit Pistons 114-103 on Monday evening in what could be a preview of the NBA Finals.

The Spurs have achieved a nine-game winning streak, their longest of the season, and are second only to the reigning champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, in the Western Conference standings.

Detroit, currently leading the Eastern Conference and coming off five consecutive victories, will play host to Oklahoma City this Wednesday evening for another significant challenge.

Prominent Detroit player Cade Cunningham faced difficulties, connecting on only 5 of 26 attempts from the field and concluding the game with 16 points and 10 assists.

Commencing a five-game road stretch, San Antonio quickly established a 14-2 advantage and maintained a lead for a significant portion of the contest. Upon their return to their home court, the Spurs are set to welcome the Pistons on the fifth of March.

The Pistons staged a comeback to take a three-point lead following the initial period, but the Spurs reasserted dominance through successful perimeter shooting, while Wembanyama, their 7-foot-4 center, was a constant defensive presence, swatting and redirecting shots throughout the game on the other end of the court.

San Antonio netted the initial seven points in the final period to establish a lead of ten points or more and had no difficulty maintaining a comfortable cushion.

This triumph marked the Spurs’ fifth victory against a club boasting the league’s best record prior to the match (four instances against the Thunder, one against the Pistons). This represents the highest number achieved by any team in a single season since the 1992-92 Knicks (after at least 10 games played in the season), as per ESPN’s findings.

Jalen Duren contributed 25 points and 14 boards for Detroit, making his second appearance subsequent to receiving a two-game ban imposed by the NBA. Isaiah Stewart remains sidelined, serving his suspension, which resulted from an altercation during a match in Charlotte earlier this month.

Emotions ran high during the second period when Cunningham was assessed an offensive foul for extending his arms and taking down Spurs guard Stephon Castle. San Antonio forward Keldon Johnson retaliated by shoving Cunningham, and subsequently, Duren gestured accusingly with his right finger towards Johnson’s face.

Following an official review, Johnson and Duren each received technical fouls.

The Associated Press supplied information for this article.
