Troops from the United States and Israel have initiated military offensives targeting Iran, with President Donald Trump characterizing these assaults as a “significant military campaign” against the Iranian government.

Blasts within Iran were initially documented during the predawn hours of Saturday, Eastern Time, as plumes of smoke ascended over Tehran, the capital. Soon after initial accounts of the assaults surfaced, both America and Israel asserted accountability for the offensives.

Via an eight-minute video shared on Truth Social and X, Trump declared that the mission’s goal was to “safeguard American citizens through neutralizing immediate dangers emanating from the Iranian government.” Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, released a declaration corroborating the military action and stated that Israel sought to “eliminate the fundamental peril presented” by Iran.

Soon after corroborating the initiation of the assaults, the Israel Defense Forces furthermore reported that it had “detected” Iranian projectiles heading for Israel.

America and Iran have engaged in three recent series of facilitated diplomatic talks, presented as an endeavor to establish a pact concerning Iran’s atomic initiatives and prevent military confrontation. Accounts from discussions held in Geneva on Thursday appeared unenthusiastic, as delegates conveyed somewhat optimistic responses to reporters and on social platforms. For instance, Oman’s foreign minister, Badr Albusaidi, conveyed on X that “considerable headway” had been made and that specialized teams would convene for additional deliberation next week in Vienna.

On Friday, in a subsequent update, he announced having met with American Vice President JD Vance and expressed anticipation for “additional and conclusive advancement in the days ahead.” He further stated, “Tranquility is attainable.” Nevertheless, likewise on Friday, American authorities instructed embassy personnel in Israel to depart the nation.

These assaults succeed weeks of American military accumulation in the Middle East and heightened deployment of reconnaissance planes within the area. Combat aircraft, transport planes, and the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier were all positioned prior to the offensives. Strain between America and Iran has escalated since early January, initially concerning Iranian troops slaying thousands of anti-regime demonstrators amidst a broad internet outage, and subsequently regarding discussions surrounding the nation’s atomic development.

Prior to a gathering with several American governors on February 20, President Trump openly conceded, for the initial occasion, that he was contemplating an assault on Iran. “I suppose I can state that I am thinking about it,” he informed journalists. Leading Democrats on the House Foreign Affairs, Armed Services, and Intelligence Panels issued a declaration in response to Trump’s remarks, stating their “firm opposition to anticipatory American military intervention against Iran,” which they assert “would be unsettling, perilous, and detrimental to endeavors aimed at establishing tranquility in the Middle East.”

During January, as demonstrations in Iran escalated, Trump asserted that American troops could intercede and halt the brutality—though no prompt measures ensued. The American-headquartered Human Rights Activists News Agency reports that 7,015 individuals perished during the demonstrations, and 11,744 occurrences are still under examination. The agency alleges over 53,000 people have been apprehended.

Amidst the most fervent period of protests in January, Trump stated that “assistance is imminent” and his government would undertake “extremely robust measures” against the Iranian government should any apprehended demonstrators subsequently be put to death. He subsequently asserted that an “enormous fleet” was being dispatched toward Iran, a nation whose southern frontiers lie along the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. “It is advancing swiftly, imbued with considerable might, fervor, and resolve,” Trump penned in a Truth Social update.

Satellite imagery captured mid-February, and corroborated by the BBC, revealed that the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, characterized as among the globe’s largest naval vessels, had reached the area. Combat planes were additionally redeployed to military installations in Jordan, and over 250 American transport missions have occurred in recent weeks, as per CNN’s assessment. The recently deployed naval craft and amplified the thousands of American staff already stationed in the Middle East.

Trump’s earlier admonitory communiqués in January asserted that “the hour is late” and implied an American military assault on Iran might be “considerably more severe” than the previous year’s bombardment of Iranian atomic installations, known as “Midnight Hammer.”

During that June endeavor, over 100 American military planes initiated a largely unforeseen aerial bombardment targeting three locations linked to Iran’s atomic initiative, namely Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. Throughout the offensive, they deployed a 30,000-pound “bunker-buster” munition designed to harm subterranean installations. However, on the whole, Midnight Hammer did not appear to eradicate Iran’s atomic advancement capacities.
