The Manchester United footballer, Harry Maguire, received a 15-month conditional prison term from a Greek court, stemming from an event on Mykonos island in August 2020.
Initially, the English national squad member was given a conditional penalty of 21 months and 10 days back in 2020, following a conviction for multiple instances of assault, endeavoring to bribe, aggression towards government staff, and verbal abuse.
His defense attorneys promptly filed an appeal, a move that, according to Greek legal statutes, invalidated the previous judgment and initiated a complete new hearing.
Following delays on four separate times from 2023 through 2025, the legal process recommenced in Syros this Wednesday.
The tribunal determined Maguire to be culpable for minor physical attack, opposing apprehension, and a bid for corruption.
As the accusations were considered less serious compared to the initial verdict, the penalty was lessened to a 15-month conditional period.
Reports suggest Maguire refutes any culpability and plans to challenge the decision at the highest court. The footballer, aged 32, has earlier turned down chances to resolve the matter extrajudicially, preserving his resolve to vindicate himself via the judicial system.
Notwithstanding the judgment, Maguire continues to be a member of the United team for the Premier League match on Wednesday against Newcastle, having recovered subsequent to being withdrawn due to sickness during Sunday’s victory against Crystal Palace.
