India will confront New Zealdn in the T20 Cricket World Cup final. Explore our thorough analysis here
The 2026 T20 World Cup culminates on Sunday as India and New Zealand go head-to-head in the championship match.
India aims to defend the title they secured in 2024, while New Zealand seeks to clinch the coveted trophy for the initial time in their history.
India’s journey encountered a setback during the Super 8 stage when they were dismissed for a mere 111 runs, chasing South Africa’s formidable score of 187.
Nonetheless, India swiftly rebounded, securing victories against Zimbabwe and the West Indies to guarantee their spot in the semi-finals.
They subsequently delivered an electrifying performance in the penultimate round versus England in Mumbai. Sanju Samson’s remarkable 89 runs off 42 deliveries propelled India to a total of 253 within their allotted 20 overs.
England mounted a robust pursuit, led by Jacob Bethell’s century (105), but India maintained composure, largely thanks to Jasprit Bumrah’s exceptional bowling, ultimately securing a tight win to advance to the final.
New Zealand is vying for their inaugural ICC white-ball championship since triumphing in the Champions Trophy in 2000. The Black Caps nearly claimed the T20 World Cup in 2021 but were vanquished by Australia in the final contest.
Their 2026 campaign commenced with three triumphs from four group stage encounters, experiencing their sole defeat against South Africa.
New Zealand’s performance in the Super 8 stage yielded mixed outcomes. Their initial fixture against Pakistan was called off due to inclement weather, before they achieved a convincing 67-run victory over Sri Lanka.
A four-wicket loss to England ensued, but a superior net run rate ensured their second-place finish in the group ahead of Pakistan, securing their progression to the semi-finals.
Mitchell Santner’s squad then showcased their most impressive display of the competition against previously undefeated South Africa.
Squad updates for India versus New Zealand
India faces a decision regarding the retention of opener Abhishek Sharma, whose average across seven innings in the competition stands at a mere 12.71.
Should Sharma be omitted, Ishan Kishan might be elevated to open alongside Sanju Samson, potentially creating an opportunity for Rinku Singh to join the middle order.
Within the bowling contingent, Kuldeep Yadav is vying for selection, particularly after Varun Chakravarthy’s challenging performance in the semi-final encounter with England.
New Zealand may implement a strategic alteration concerning the inclusion of leg-spinner Ish Sodhi, with the playing conditions in Ahmedabad likely to influence their ultimate eleven.
Jim Neesham had replaced Sodhi in the semi-final and could step aside if New Zealand opts to reintroduce the spinner into their lineup.
New Zealand’s opening duo of Finn Allen and Tim Seifert has proven vital to their advancement, collectively accumulating 563 runs throughout the championship.
