GREEN BAY, Wis. — On Wednesday, the Packers secured vital reinforcement for their defensive line, led by freshly appointed defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, by finalizing an agreement with Javon Hargrave, a one-time Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle.
His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, informed ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Hargrave committed to a two-year deal valued at $23 million, with $13 million allocated for the initial year.
Hargrave was formally waived by the Vikings on Wednesday.
The Packers were already lacking depth on their defensive front prior to trading defensive tackle Colby Wooden to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for linebacker Zaire Franklin just days ago.
In Hargrave, Gannon acquires a player he knows well. Gannon, the previous head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, served as defensive coordinator for two out of Hargrave’s three seasons with the Eagles. During that two-year period (2021-22), Hargrave amassed 18.5 sacks and 104 tackles.
This will be Gannon’s inaugural season as the Packers’ defensive coordinator. He succeeded Jeff Hafley, who accepted the head coaching position with the Miami Dolphins.
Hargrave had inked a two-year pact with the Vikings in the prior year, having recuperated from a torn right triceps injury that abbreviated his 2024 season while with the San Francisco 49ers.
He commenced 15 games at 33 years old, yet only achieved 3.5 sacks, and was slated to receive $15 million with a cap figure of $21.7 million for the upcoming 2026 season.
Drafted in the third round by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2016, Hargrave has accumulated 49 sacks over a decade. He has earned selection to two Pro Bowls.
ESPN’s Kevin Seifert aided in the compilation of this article.
