The Royal Air Force confirms that RAF Typhoon combat aircraft have been dispatched to Romania to spearhead a NATO aerial security operation on the Alliance’s eastern boundary, under Operation Biloxi 2026.
Jets belonging to 3 (Fighter) Squadron, operating under the 121 Expeditionary Air Wing, are set to undertake a four-month assignment from Borcea Air Base. This contingent will assume responsibilities previously held by a German Eurofighter unit. This operation is an integral component of NATO’s persistent heightened vigilance efforts throughout the area.
While stationed there, RAF Typhoons, in conjunction with the Romanian Air Force, will execute rapid response readiness tasks. Their role involves intercepting unrecognised or unsynchronised aerial vehicles encroaching upon NATO airspace. Such operations are purposed to uphold the security of confederate air space and to furnish an overt dissuasive posture.
Furthermore, this positioning underscores NATO’s focus on collaborative capability. UK forces will be engaging with Romanian and diverse multinational partners, all directed by the Combined Air Operations Centre situated in Torrejon, Spain.
Wing Commander Sonny, Commander of 3 (Fighter) Squadron, remarked that the mission emphasizes the UK’s contribution within the coalition, asserting that “the stationing of our Typhoons in Romania illustrates the United Kingdom’s steadfast dedication to NATO and the safeguarding of allied airspace.”
He further stated that the undertaking reinforces the RAF’s capacity for swift deployment, observing that “this mission demonstrates the RAF’s capability to quickly extend formidable aerial might in furtherance of mutual protection whenever and wherever needed.”
