Caleb Williams‘ “Iceman” moniker is at risk of being relinquished.

The Chicago Bears‘ signal-caller recently submitted trademark requests for the appellation, bestowed upon him after several clutch performances during the recent season. However, the same nickname was also famously adopted by Basketball Hall of Famer George Gervin, a former player for the Chicago Bulls.

Gervin, nevertheless, submitted analogous trademark claims just four days afterward, asserting his continuous utilization of the nickname for various products and offerings since 1979. Jerald Barisano, the president and CEO of Gervin Global Management, informed the Chicago Sun-Times that he had erroneously believed Gervin had already secured the trademark.

“I possess utmost esteem for [Williams],” Gervin communicated to the publication earlier this week. “He has already demonstrated excellence, and his future prospects are immense. Akin to an ‘Iceman.’ However, that name is already claimed…

“All I am asserting is this: Young man, we already possess one ‘Iceman.’”

Barisano further remarked, “We are anticipating the examiners will act appropriately. They need only perform a single Google search, and they will discover a multitude of articles concerning the ‘Iceman,’ George Gervin.”

The trademark registrations Williams submitted encompassed two profiles of himself, stemming from the dramatic fourth-down-and-eight throw to Rome Odunze against the Green Bay Packers during the NFC wild-card round. The Sun-Times observed that Williams’ trademarks pertained to items such as athletic equipment, footballs, sweatshirts, T-shirts, hats, jerseys, jackets, vests, water bottles, mugs, bags, backpacks, luggage, sunglasses, posters, and digital collector cards.

Barisano, however, stated that he and Gervin intend to dispute the trademark should it be granted to the quarterback.

During his second season, the 2024 top draft selection experienced his breakthrough performance, guiding the Bears to an NFC North championship and advancing to the divisional round. He passed for 3,942 yards and rushed for an additional 489. His aggregate yardage of 4,352 established a new record for a Bears quarterback, as he also tossed 27 touchdowns with merely seven turnovers.
