OpenAI has sealed an agreement to take over TBPN, a tech-centric talk program well-known in Silicon Valley, embarking on an unforeseen foray into media dissemination after vowing to relinquish “ancillary projects” and prioritize its fundamental activities.

The creator of ChatGPT acquired the eleven-member enterprise in a transaction valued at “under several hundred million dollars,” as per an individual familiar with the specifics of the arrangement.

TBPN, or Technology Business Programming Network, has garnered a loyal audience among new venture initiators and their backers since its inception in October 2024.

Joint presenters and self-proclaimed “tech siblings,” Jordi Hays and John Coogan, have dialogued with Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg and OpenAI founder Sam Altman, establishing themselves as a regular presence at technology gatherings.

Fidji Simo, who oversees OpenAI’s product division, informed employees on Thursday that TBPN stood as “among the venues where discussions concerning artificial intelligence and creators genuinely occur continually.”

Coogan and Hays had fashioned “a platform for a genuine, beneficial dialogue about the transformations AI brings about — with creators and technology adopters as the focal point,” she further noted.

In a distinct memorandum last month, Simo exhorted personnel to focus intently on main revenue streams such as ChatGPT and programming utilities for corporate clients. “We cannot forfeit this opportunity because we are diverted by ancillary pursuits,” she penned.

An individual affiliated with OpenAI rebuffed the suggestion that the transaction constituted a diversion for an enterprise contending with Google and Anthropic. “Researchers and engineers will not allocate effort to this, and it’s not a novel offering, therefore it isn’t a secondary task,” they stated.

TBPN typically draws about 70,000 audience members for each daily installment and was projected to earn approximately $30 million in income this year, primarily through commercials, prior to the agreement, as reported by the individual familiar with the conditions.

OpenAI stated that TBPN would stay in Los Angeles and maintain journalistic autonomy, even though its new proprietors are among the most prominent AI enterprises globally and a rival to multiple of the talk show’s current sponsors.

“While we’ve been evaluative of the sector occasionally, after familiarizing ourselves with Sam and the OpenAI team, what was particularly striking was their receptiveness to input and dedication to achieving correctness,” Hays remarked. “Transitioning from observation to tangible influence in how this technology is disseminated and comprehended worldwide is vitally significant to us.”

Hays and his team would answer to OpenAI’s chief of international relations, Chris Lehane, and “assist with brand promotion and public relations at OpenAI but preserve their content sovereignty,” the firm stated.

Altman on Thursday shared on X: “I don’t anticipate [TBPN] to be less critical of us; I am certain I’ll contribute my share to facilitate that outcome with periodic ill-advised choices.”

The Wall Street Journal initially disclosed that OpenAI was purchasing TBPN.
