Colorado’s coach, Deion Sanders, is finalizing the restructuring of his coaching team as spring training is set to commence on Monday. He will also be without a close associate.

Warren Sapp, the Hall of Fame defensive lineman, made public his stepping down, citing a desire to “pursue other opportunities,” as disclosed in a declaration by the institution. The statement added: “CU athletics expresses gratitude to Warren for his contributions to our football program over the past two seasons and for his dedication to our student-athletes.”

Sapp served as the defensive pass-rush strategist for the Buffaloes the previous season.

Sanders elevated Chris Marve to defensive coordinator following the exit of Robert Livingston, who recently accepted a position with the Denver Broncos as their aerial attack strategist and defensive back coach. Livingston was affiliated with the Buffaloes for two campaigns, notably during the season when Travis Hunter secured the Heisman Trophy as a versatile star performer.

Marve held the roles of defensive coordinator and interior linebackers coach at Virginia Tech from 2022 to 2024. He joined Colorado in December to oversee the linebackers.

“Chris Marve was brought on board with the understanding that he might someday progress, given his background and expertise, should the chance arise,” Sanders declared in a Saturday announcement. “He is an instructor, an inspirer, and an individual of commendable integrity.”

It has been a hectic period in terms of coaching staff changes for Sanders. In December, he recruited offensive strategist Brennan Marion to implement a high-powered system which Marion designated as the “Go-Go” offense.

The Buffaloes presently boast an African American head coach along with African American offensive and defensive coordinators, unprecedented in the history of the program, the institution disclosed.

“I’m eager to commence practice on Monday with these two exceptional strategists who will elevate our initiative both athletically and culturally,” expressed Sanders, whose squad concluded the previous season with a 3-9 record.

Further personnel added to the team comprise Vonn Bell, a veteran NFL athlete, who is set to serve as an analyst and assist with the defensive backfield.

Dante Carter assumes the role of defensive line coach, replacing Domata Peko, who departed to align with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Aaron Fletcher is designated to supervise the defensive backs, and Justin Houlihan acts as an analyst while also providing assistance to the quarterbacks.

Johnnie Mack is appointed to lead the running backs unit, succeeding Marshall Faulk, who accepted the head coaching position at Southern University. Clancy Pendergast joined as a senior strategic advisor. He will additionally provide support to the linebackers.
