MANCHESTER, England — Morgan Gibbs-White and Elliot Anderson might potentially join Manchester City’s squad for the upcoming season.

Should they arrive at the City Football Academy during the summer months, they might find themselves needing to maintain a low profile for a brief period. The unexpected 2-2 stalemate secured by the Nottingham Forest duo at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, thanks to their goals, dealt a significant setback to the championship aspirations of their prospective future colleagues.

Coupled with Arsenal’s 1-0 triumph at Brighton & Hove Albion, the points differential at the summit has expanded to seven. Gibbs-White and Anderson, both targets for City ahead of the next transfer period, will remain unconcerned.

– The Premier League is boring now: A tactical way to save it

– What’s going on with Premier League’s 115 charges against Man City?

Forest themselves are engaged in their own struggle at the opposite end of the standings, and a valuable point keeps them just outside the relegation zone. Any lesser outcome would have seen them finish the day in the bottom three, a consequence of West Ham United’s 1-0 victory over Fulham.

This particular draw elicited vastly different responses from the two head coaches, Pep Guardiola and Vitor Pereira.

“Sometimes I speak; sometimes I don’t,” Guardiola commented at the conclusion of a concise and sharp post-match press conference. “Today, it is not necessary. Tomorrow, we shall see.”

Pereira, as expected, was considerably more optimistic after securing his inaugural Premier League point since succeeding Sean Dyche. “It was a demanding match, but my team displayed immense character,” he stated. “Quality, structured play, and one fewer day than City to recuperate.”

“I am pleased with my players. Superb goals, two superb goals. We demonstrated to ourselves that we can acquire points anywhere.”

Despite City’s recent commendable performances, one could contend that an outcome like this had been looming. This current Guardiola squad is not one that can effortlessly overwhelm every opponent. The reverse fixture against Forest at the City Ground in December concluded 2-1 in City’s favor. Their most recent two victories against Newcastle United and Leeds United were also determined by a solitary goal.

Approximately 40% of their Premier League successes this season have been achieved with a one-goal differential. This represents Manchester City’s highest proportion of single-goal wins since the 2012-13 campaign, when it surpassed 50%.

When margins are so slender, it becomes challenging to consistently emerge victorious, and against Forest, City faltered. They initially gained the advantage via Antoine Semenyo in the first half, only to be equalized by a moment of brilliant improvisation from Gibbs-White.

Ola Aina’s deep cross was headed back into play by Igor Jesus and, with no clear path and Rúben Dias closely marking him, Gibbs-White deftly back-heeled his shot past Gianluigi Donnarumma.

“He’s an exceptional talent,” Pereira observed.

“He possesses considerable skill. He senses opportunities and open areas and netted a magnificent goal. He embodies the resolve we require. He’s a combatant, and this is the attitude I wish to see in my squad.”

If that caught the attention of Hugo Viana, City’s director of football, then Anderson certainly ensured he was not outshone. After Rodri converted Rayan Aït-Nouri’s corner with a header to make it 2-1, the England midfielder executed a precise one-two with Callum Hudson-Odoi and precisely struck his finish into the corner.

This was enough to guarantee Forest avoided defeat in a league match at City for the first time in nearly three decades.

“Elliot, I initially thought, okay, perhaps after 60 or 70 minutes, I might need to make a substitution because I didn’t believe he would possess the stamina to play with the intensity required here,” Pereira admitted.

“But ultimately, it was a pleasant surprise for me; he maintained significant energy and quality until the very end.”

Anderson was also integral to Forest’s determined defensive effort, which prevented City from snatching the victory late in the game. City appealed for two penalties – one for a challenge from Matz Sels on Erling Haaland and another for an Anderson tackle on Rodri – but neither was awarded.

Savinho had a golden opportunity with the final kick of the match, only to witness his attempt cleared off the line by Murillo. When questioned afterward about what his team could have done more effectively, Guardiola curtly responded: “Score goals.”

It should be a greater concern for Guardiola that City have now forfeited 13 points from leading positions this season. Since the turn of the year, they have held advantages against Chelsea, Brighton, Tottenham Hotspur, and Forest, yet have only secured four points out of a possible 12.

With a game in hand and Arsenal scheduled to visit the Etihad in April, Guardiola maintains an optimistic outlook.

“There are still nine fixtures remaining; for them [Arsenal], one less now, and next up is Newcastle [on Saturday],” he stated. “I consistently focus on what comes next; I don’t overthink.”

“Generally speaking, upon analysis, it was a strong showing – many, many commendable aspects. Of course, there are areas in certain departments where we can enhance our performance.”

Improvements during the summer might manifest in the form of Gibbs-White and Anderson. Still wearing the red of Forest currently, they have inflicted a setback on City’s title aspirations and, in doing so, boosted their own prospects of avoiding relegation.
