Jordan Henderson states that he and his England colleagues “consistently stand ready to back” Ben White, after the defender faced jeers from a segment of supporters upon his rejoining the national squad.
White entered the pitch with just over 20 minutes left in the Three Lions’ exhibition match against Uruguay at Wembley on Friday, subsequently netting the initial goal and then giving up a spot-kick, resulting in a 1-1 stalemate.
Nevertheless, catcalls emanated from a portion of the home crowd as the Arsenal backliner made his appearance. He was participating in his inaugural international fixture since departing the 2022 World Cup squad due to individual circumstances and consequently “expressed no desire for consideration” for a national team selection for the duration of Gareth Southgate’s managerial term.

England players pledge ‘backing’ for White
Henderson expressed his empathy for White and further stated that fans and the press lacked complete knowledge of the narrative of the occurrences in Qatar four years prior.
“As colleagues, our assistance is constant,” Henderson stated, himself having faced jeers from England supporters following his contentious transfer to the Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq.
“I’ve personally experienced similar situations, but that is an inherent component of being an England player.
“A segment of the supporters likely remains unaware of the reasons for their jeering, they absorb narratives disseminated by the press, and frequently, media portrayals diverge from reality.
“Few are privy to the intricate details of the events in Qatar and it is a matter for us to manage internally. Ben has performed well since his reintegration and we shall stand by him as colleagues.”
The Brentford midfielder, who has 89 caps to his name, counselled White to “endeavour not to internalise it excessively”, further remarking that “the press possesses the capacity to distort narratives, which does not consistently reflect veracity and subsequently, supporters may adopt these interpretations as fact.
Henderson further commented: “Such occurrences present significant challenges, hence it is crucial for us to ensure his well-being, of which I am confident. I was pleased by his appearance and his scoring of a goal, which constitutes the primary objective.”

Tuchel: Defender is obliged to ‘resolve misunderstandings’
White was summoned by new England head coach Thomas Tuchel subsequent to an injury sustained by Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah.
Tuchel, nevertheless, asserted that White, who has remained publicly silent regarding his choice to abstain from selection, is compelled to “address unresolved issues” with his England colleagues and declared it “imperative” for him to elucidate his rationale to those squad members present in Qatar.
“In my estimation, every individual merits an additional opportunity,” Tuchel remarked.
“I am not precisely aware of the occurrences [in Qatar]. My focus was not entirely on that matter as my intention was to commence afresh.
“Upon my inquiry to Ben regarding his readiness to represent me and England, he promptly, and unreservedly, affirmed his eagerness and his strong desire to return.
“I believe it is vital for him to address any lingering issues with his colleagues and I anticipate he will do so once the players who shared the World Cup experience with him rejoin the squad.”
England will be back at Wembley on Tuesday for their encounter with Japan, the inaugural nation to secure qualification for this summer’s World Cup finals.
The US, Mexico and Canada were granted automatic berths by virtue of being co-hosting nations.
