GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Thomas Haugh contributed 22 points, Rueben Chinyelu achieved his 17th double-double of the season, and the No. 7 Florida Gators secured at least a portion of the Southeastern Conference championship with a dominant 111-77 triumph over 20th-ranked Arkansas on Saturday night.
This outcome matched the most crushing loss of Arkansas coach John Calipari’s professional tenure, a 34-point deficit against Duke back in 2018. At that juncture, Calipari was affiliated with Kentucky.
With their ninth consecutive triumph, the Gators (23-6, 14-2 SEC) concluded an undefeated February, thereby clinching their initial regular-season championship since 2014. They maintain a two-game lead over No. 17 Alabama with two matchups remaining and could secure the undisputed title Tuesday evening on their home court.
However, they wasted no time in reveling.
With a capacity audience and ESPN’s College GameDay present, Florida transformed Billy Donovan Court into a celebratory venue. Coach Todd Golden was prominently featured as the squad distributed caps and shirts and ceremonially snipped the nets. Furthermore, this was not Golden’s initial moment in the limelight on Saturday evening.
Golden and Calipari were issued dual technical fouls early in the second half following a vocal confrontation near midcourt. Calipari’s assistants had to restrain him. Golden, in turn, energized the crowd exceeding 11,000 spectators.
This proved to be one of the paucity of notable events in a contest that was largely decided quickly.
The Gators asserted supremacy across the court, executing maneuvers both near the basket and from distance, establishing a 30-point advantage with 13 minutes remaining. The most unexpected performers were reserve athletes Urban Klavzar and Isaiah Brown. Klavzar converted his initial four shots from beyond the arc, concluding with 14 points, while Brown amassed 11 points, attributable in part to two three-pointers.
Nevertheless, it was Florida’s frontcourt players who dictated the pace for the majority of the contest. Haugh, Chinyelu, and Alex Condon dominated in the interior, aiding the Gators in surpassing Arkansas in rebounding by a 49-30 margin and prevailing in the low-post contest.
Billy Richmond III spearheaded the Razorbacks (21-8, 11-5) with 22 markers, 14 of which came in the initial quarter-hour. Darius Acuff Jr., who tops the SEC in points and dimes, concluded with 17 markers and six setups.
Florida guard Boogie Fland, contending with his erstwhile team, was among seven Gators achieving double-digit scoring and contributed to snapping Calipari’s six-match unbeaten run in Gainesville.
Florida has secured six consecutive victories against ranked teams, tallying a minimum of 90 points in each contest. This represents the second-most extended run of its kind in college basketball history. The top benchmark is equally possessed by UNLV and Loyola-Marymount, both during the 1989-90 season.
