Steven Gerrard has disclosed he connected with Mohamed Salah following the Liverpool attacker’s impactful remarks earlier this season.
Salah conveyed his vexation in December, having been omitted from the lineup during a stalemate with Leeds. He asserted feeling “betrayed” and hinted at underlying problems within Liverpool, notably a strained rapport with manager Arne Slot.
Despite the attacker subsequently regaining consistent participation, his departure from the club upon his contract’s conclusion this summer has since been verified.
Discussing the circumstances on the Overlap, Gerrard commented: “I believe the moment is opportune.”
“Evidently, he’s experienced a dispute with the gaffer. I am unaware of its intensity, but he conducted the interview, an action I suspect he will rue in the future.”
“That indicated to me an underlying problem. Furthermore, I believe that even prior to that, Liverpool, as a football organization, intended to offer Mo Salah merely a single year [on his contract].”
“Instead of two, yet owing to his truly exceptional season and impressive statistics, they ultimately provided him with a two-year [agreement].”
“I consistently perceived it as a single-year tenure at that caliber. We have all participated in such periods, and I simply believe it is in everyone’s ultimate benefit for it to conclude, yet still on Mo Salah’s own conditions.”
Gerrard further verified that he reached out to Salah personally subsequent to the interview, advising him to handle his departure judiciously.
“I conversed with him concerning that interview at the time and essentially conveyed to him, ‘Avoid actions that lead to a negative departure’. My communication with him was direct.”
“He occasionally messages me, or I message him, primarily when I’m traveling with [Gerrard’s son] Leo. Simply so Leo can meet him.”
“While I am not intimately acquainted with him, it afforded me the chance to impart: ‘You have been here for eight or nine years, you arrived and established this lasting impact. Simply depart on your own conditions, appropriately.’”
“He remains somewhat affected by the occurrence. He was an alternate, intermittently part of the squad then. He was displeased. However, I simply considered it regrettable had he departed in January without proper closure.”
“Having undertaken some managerial responsibilities myself, I now comprehend both perspectives of the situation.”
Salah has consistently participated throughout the Premier League season, accumulating more than 30 matches across all tournaments.
