LOS ANGELES — Following the Celtics’ 111-89 triumph over the Lakers on Sunday, a victory propelled by Jaylen Brown’s contribution of 32 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, and 3 steals, he garnered an MVP endorsement from the opposing faction of the Boston-L.A. contention.
LeBron James, a four-time MVP, expressed his belief that Brown presents a compelling argument this season for acquiring his initial recognition.
“This entire MVP discussion, I’m puzzled as to why his name isn’t mentioned more frequently,” James remarked. “No one gave them a chance at the start of the season. And he’s averaging what, 30? Just under 30? It often feels like a popularity competition, I assure you.”
Boston’s triumph against the Lakers elevated their standing to 37-19, securing the second-best record in the Eastern Conference.
Brown had entered Sunday’s game averaging personal bests in points (29.2), rebounds (7.0), and assists (4.8).
James articulated that Brown merits consideration due to the Celtics’ formidable performance, despite Jayson Tatum’s season-long absence while recuperating from a torn Achilles and the departure of Jrue Holiday, Al Horford, and Kristaps Porzingis from their 2024 championship squad.
“I believe he simply harnessed the incentive of numerous individuals predicting a subpar year for them,” James stated. “The entire championship roster has essentially undergone a transformation, and he utilized that as an impetus to keep them competitive. They are demonstrating excellent basketball, and that’s attributable to him and the rest of his teammates. He has taken that pivotal next stride.”
Brown mentioned his efforts to avoid excessive attention to either critique or commendation directed his way, but then outlined his qualifications for the distinction as he perceives them.
“I am convinced I am the premier two-way competitor globally,” Brown asserted. “I contribute on both ends of the court. Consistently, I am available, which is a difficult feat. I am a guiding figure. I assist in directing my team, empowering them to step onto the court and play with self-assurance, elements that don’t always appear in analytical data. And I am a victor. I strive to prevail every single night. Thus, I am appreciative.
“It is a privilege to participate in the Celtics-Lakers rivalry. It is an honor for LeBron, arguably the greatest athlete to ever grace the game, to offer such high praise. So, I am simply grateful.”
James and Brown had been All-Star colleagues on the USA Stripes contingent earlier this month.
Brown noted that this occasion enabled him and James to reconnect regarding an exchange they had when Brown was a newcomer to the league.
“When I first entered the league, my inaugural start was against the Cleveland Cavaliers, and subsequent to the game, he approached me and whispered in my ear, ‘You will become an All-Star someday; you’re going to be an outstanding player,'” Brown recounted. “So, we conversed about that at the All-Star Game. ‘Do you recall that from a decade ago?’ And he grinned, saying, ‘Naturally, nothing you’re accomplishing now surprises me. So just persist in proving detractors wrong. Continue doing what is necessary and keep leading your squad, and people will notice.'”
Brown indicated that there were additional topics he and James discussed, but he would not disclose them.
He might have been alluding to an instance where he was captured on camera at a 2024 Las Vegas Summer League game, questioning Bronny James’ suitability as a professional athlete while seated courtside.
“Our rapport has been quite respectful, apart from the remarks he made regarding Bronny at Summer League,” James commented about Brown. “But aside from that, other than that, we’ve been fine.”
Brown subsequently addressed his perspectives concerning Bronny, sharing on a social media platform: “It’s a testament of pride to have your offspring alongside you in the NBA. … Bronny possesses all the necessary resources to achieve success. I eagerly anticipate observing his progression.”
James conveyed that he and Brown “will be perfectly fine.”
“I believe he posted something about it on social media,” James stated. “It’s all good, but Bronny has a significant journey ahead, yet that’s a separate matter. But the young man, I mean, listen, JB is performing [excellently]. Gosh, he’s playing superb basketball, indeed.”
