CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy — Lindsey Vonn was getting ready to return to her native land on Sunday after her dreadful, head-over-heels fall in the Olympic downhill, the U.S. ski team’s chief informed The Associated Press.
Sophie Goldschmidt, chief executive and president of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association, communicated to the AP that the team’s medical personnel had been managing Vonn’s recuperation since the accident and subsequent helicopter evacuation at the Milan Cortina Games and aimed to escort her home.
Vonn has undergone numerous operations in Italy to mend a complex shinbone fracture in her left leg.
“We’re addressing all those details currently,” Goldschmidt stated. “We’ve got a dedicated group providing aid, and she’ll return to the U.S. for additional procedures.”
Onlookers observing Vonn strive for a podium finish at age 41 with a ruptured ACL in her left knee and a fragmentary titanium implant in her right knee were left aghast when the prominent American athlete snagged a gate 13 seconds into her run — leading to a rotational, airborne collision that sent her tumbling uncontrollably down the Dolomite mountain.
“The collision, the quietude, everyone was simply stunned. And you could tell it was a truly severe wound,” remarked Goldschmidt, who was present at the accident. “There’s considerable peril in participating in various mountain athletic activities, but it fosters greater admiration for the extraordinary capabilities of these competitors.
“I mean, risking one’s physique, traveling at such velocities, the corporeal demand. Sometimes actually on the broadcast it’s quite challenging to convey that effectively. Peril occasionally attracts spectators and is rather mesmerizing. We naturally anticipate we won’t have misfortunes like that, but it is unfortunately an inherent aspect of our disciplines.”
Vonn declared she had no remorse.
“When I recollect my fall, I wasn’t at the starting point ignorant of the possible outcomes,” Vonn shared in an Instagram post on Saturday evening. “I understood my actions. I opted for a gamble. Every skier in that starting gate took the identical peril. Because even if you are the most powerful individual globally, the summit invariably dictates the terms.
“But merely because I was prepared, that offered no assurances. No aspect of existence is assured. That’s the venture of pursuing aspirations, you could tumble but if you abstain from effort, you’ll remain ignorant.”
Goldschmidt called on Vonn at the medical facility on two occasions and said, “She’s not suffering discomfort. She’s in a steady state.
“She pursued a daring trajectory and was fully committed, and it was mere centimeters away from what could have resulted in a vastly altered outcome. But her contributions to our disciplines and the broader athletic field, her exemplary status, has reached an entirely new plane. You frequently discover more about individuals amidst such challenging periods than compared to their triumphs.”
