RENTON, Wash. — On Wednesday, at a press briefing concerning Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s unprecedented contract renewal, Seattle Seahawks executive John Schneider recalled the dismay he experienced nearly three years prior, upon departing from the standout wide receiver’s Ohio State pro day.

Due to a hamstring ailment that prematurely concluded his final collegiate season, Smith-Njigba was not anticipated to participate in a 40-yard sprint on that occasion. However, when he registered a respectable time of 4.48 seconds, standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 200 pounds, Schneider became certain that Seattle’s prospects of selecting him in the draft had evaporated.

“I thought, ‘That’s impossible,'” Schneider recounted. “‘What’s the point of this meeting?'”

The Seahawks had not envisioned securing Smith-Njigba with the 20th overall selection in 2023. Yet, after three seasons, two Pro Bowls, and an Offensive Player of the Year accolade, the Super Bowl victors have now committed to Smith-Njigba for the foreseeable future, through a four-year, $168.6 million prolongation he formally executed on Wednesday.

“This marks a truly thrilling day for the Seahawks franchise,” Schneider declared. “When approaching ownership to request a financial commitment of this magnitude, one must consistently remain highly aware of the individual involved, and I am simply so proud of Jax and his character. Your parents performed admirably in nurturing you, truly. It’s often overlooked how youthful you still are.”

At the age of 24, Smith-Njigba has ascended to become the NFL’s top-earning receiver, commanding an average of $42.15 million in new funds. This agreement, which secures his services until 2031, furthermore surpassed quarterback Russell Wilson’s four-year, $140 million extension from 2019, making it the most lucrative in the franchise’s annals.

The Seahawks were confident in undertaking such a substantial pledge, attributing it to Smith-Njigba’s demeanor alongside his aptitude. Both Schneider and coach Mike Macdonald articulated this clearly on Wednesday, positioned on either flank of the receiver on a platform within a crowded auditorium at the team’s central office.

Macdonald characterized Smith-Njigba as formidable yet modest.

“I believe it’s an unparalleled blend of skill, competitive drive, and also the altruism inherent in his being, his conduct, and his professional approach,” Macdonald stated. “It represents an uncommon synthesis — irrespective of profession — simply in existence. Possessing reverence for the process, for colleagues, for fellow players, the affection he holds for those in his vicinity regardless of their circumstances, coupled with being an utterly elite competitor when the moment demands it, and his innate capability. It truly embodies a multifaceted marvel, a remarkably impressive amalgamation.”

Donning a vintage Seahawks cap and a beige sweater vest atop a white collared shirt, Smith-Njigba expressed that finalizing the agreement felt like “a burden lifted, allowing me to perform freely.” He extended gratitude to his parents for their upbringing, recounting how his father initiated throwing footballs to him at the tender age of three.

“I lack sufficient words to convey my enthusiasm and demonstrate my affection for this city and its institution,” he remarked, “yet my actions on Sundays will speak for themselves.”

Smith-Njigba’s yearly average in new funds readily surpassed that of Ja’Marr Chase of the Cincinnati Bengals, who had prior held the distinction as the league’s most handsomely compensated receiver at $40.25 million annually. Inquired about this notable achievement, Smith-Njigba deemed it a boon, simultaneously asserting that “further endeavors perpetually await” and “a superior echelon is invariably attainable.”

Following his breakout performance with 1,130 receiving yards in 2024, Smith-Njigba subsequently amassed an astonishing 1,793 yards, a league-best, throughout the regular season. This established a franchise benchmark, a feat matched by his 119 catches. Smith-Njigba furthermore tallied 10 touchdowns en route to earning the AP Offensive Player of the Year title and securing his second successive Pro Bowl selection. He then contributed an additional 199 yards and two scores across three playoff contests, aiding Seattle in clinching Super Bowl LX.

“The sole achievement surpassing a single Super Bowl victory is two,” he stated. “Therefore, my focus is on striving for that, and whatever my squad requires of me, I shall ensure its accomplishment.”

Considering his credentials, it was largely unquestionable that the Seahawks would designate Smith-Njigba as the league’s most handsomely compensated wideout. However, this occurred sooner in the offseason than anticipated, especially given the team’s customary schedule for contract prolongations and devoid of the public spectacle that characterized other colossal agreements in Seattle’s recent history.

Schneider attributed success to Joey Laine, the Seahawks’ vice president of football administration, who manages the squad’s contract discussions.

“Our rapport with Jax’s representative, Joel Segal, has been excellent for an extensive period,” Schneider remarked. “We managed to maintain discretion and mutual esteem throughout the process. While I wouldn’t assert that high-value transactions are inherently simpler, there’s a general acknowledgment of Jax’s aptitude, his diligence, and, as I’ve mentioned, his character.”

To underscore the identical sentiment, Macdonald highlighted the presence of numerous team personnel who attended on Wednesday.

“Among the aspects that vividly illustrate Jax’s significance to us as a fundamental component of our football squad and institution is the fact that we have a packed venue today,” Macdonald articulated. “This is quite remarkable. Virtually the entire Seattle Seahawks organization is present, lending their support to Jax on this momentous occasion. I merely wish to underscore our immense enthusiasm. He constitutes a fundamental element. He is a bedrock of our collective. Witnessing his progression over the two years of our presence here, his potential is boundless. This merely marks the commencement.”

With Smith-Njigba’s contract prolongation concluded, the Seahawks are now directing their focus toward a fresh agreement for Pro Bowl cornerback Devon Witherspoon, their additional standout first-round draftee from 2023. The team’s proprietor, Jody Allen, has instructed Schneider to maintain a conventional operational stance this offseason, notwithstanding the squad being listed for acquisition in adherence to the desires of her deceased brother, Paul Allen.

“She’s like, ‘Let’s pursue another victory. Let’s tackle it with vigor,'” Schneider conveyed. “There’s an impending future on the horizon. We are preparing ourselves for it. However, at this very moment, we are simply persevering with our customary intensity.”
