Sources informed ESPN’s Pete Thamel on Saturday morning that Mark Schmidt, St. Bonaventure’s chief coach, is anticipated to step down following this season.

On Saturday, the Bonnies are set to contest their final regular season game, after which they will proceed to the Atlantic 10 tournament next week.

Having guided Bonaventure for 19 seasons, the 63-year-old Schmidt has steered the program to three NCAA tournament participations and clinched two Atlantic 10 regular-season championships. He also secured the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year award twice, in 2016 and 2021.

Curated Selections

The Bonnies clinched an at-large invitation to the NCAA tournament in 2018 by triumphing in their final 12 matches of the standard season. They were allotted an 11th seed and secured a berth in the First Four, where they prevailed over UCLA before eventually falling to Florida in the opening round.

Cumulatively, Schmidt achieved a 339-253 record throughout his tenure in Olean, New York. He stands as the record holder for total victories in St. Bonaventure men’s basketball history.

Before assuming command at St. Bonaventure in 2007, Schmidt served for six seasons as the chief coach at Robert Morris, where he compiled an 82-90 record. Additionally, he held positions as an associate coach at Xavier, Loyola (Maryland), and Penn State.

St. Bonaventure appointed Adrian Wojnarowski, erstwhile ESPN NBA Correspondent, as the program’s operations director ahead of the last campaign, and he is anticipated to play a crucial part in the quest for Schmidt’s successor.
