PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A significant altercation erupted during Saturday’s contest between No. 17 St. John’s and Providence, leading to the removal of six players. The incident was sparked by a fierce infringement committed by Friars forward Duncan Powell against Bryce Hopkins, which propelled the Red Storm’s key player forcefully to the court.
Rick Pitino, St. John’s head mentor and the figure who guided Providence to the 1987 Final Four, found himself at the heart of the commotion, endeavoring to restrain his players. However, numerous team members subsequently joined the skirmish as it shifted towards the Red Storm’s dugout.
The contest was interrupted for almost 20 minutes as the officials determined the appropriate sanctions: four St. John’s athletes were expelled, alongside two from Providence. By the moment the Friars regained possession, they had observed their narrow one-point advantage dissipate into a significant four-point shortfall.
St. John’s had commanded a lead of up to 13 points during the initial half. However, the Friars mounted a comeback in the second half, repeatedly seizing marginal one-point advantages. They held a 40-39 preponderance with 14:25 remaining when Hopkins – a player who spent three seasons in Providence – attempted a swift layup during a fast break. He was then struck forcefully across the cranium and visage by Powell’s arm, causing him to fall.
Hopkins promptly rose and advanced towards Powell, but his previous colleague, Friars forward Oswin Erhunmwunse, restrained and escorted him elsewhere. Other participants in the match became embroiled, and the athletes from the adjacent St. John’s bench were no longer containable.
The scuffling endured as mentors, officials, and security personnel endeavored to quell the disturbance.
Throughout the hiatus, athletes from both squads executed warm-up drills near their respective hoops. As the officials informed the mentors of their adjudication, the spectators erupted in a chorus of “Duncan Powell!”
Providence’s guard, Jaylin Sellers, was escorted through the passageway amidst acclamations from the assembly; he was swiftly accompanied by Powell. Dillon Mitchell, Ruben Prey, Sadiku Ibine Ayo, and Kelvin Odih from St. John’s were likewise removed.
Hopkins converted two foul shots. Subsequently, Oziyah Sellers of St. John’s successfully converted one of two attempts and then executed a layup, culminating in a five-point sequence that granted the Red Storm a 44-40 advantage. Following an unsuccessful attempt by the Friars, Dylan Darling of St. John’s sank a shot from beyond the arc, extending their lead to seven points.
Animosity resurfaced with five minutes remaining, subsequent to an aggressive infringement by Erhunmwunse on St. John’s Zuby Ejiofor. This was adjudicated as a standard infraction, yet Providence supporters beneath the hoop incited the Red Storm athletes sufficiently for the officials to intervene.
